Since February 2022, at least 15,850 civilians, including 791 children, have been confirmed dead as a result of hostilities in Ukraine. According to the UN, the number of wounded civilians is significantly higher than official estimates, and shelling of civilian infrastructure continues.<\/p>\n

Official UN data on civilian casualties<\/h2>\n

According to the Office of the High Commissioner UN Human Rights<\/a>, Since February 2022, at least 15,850 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, including 791 children. In addition, 44,809 people have been injured, including 2,752 children. Large-scale attacks with drones and missiles<\/h2>\n

Last week, Ukraine experienced one of the most extensive aerial bombardments since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. According to Kayoko Goto, on 13-14 May, Russian forces carried out more than 1,500 drone launches and dozens of missile strikes on cities across the country. These attacks resulted in new casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The UN stresses that such attacks have serious humanitarian consequences, as not only city residents but also humanitarian workers are at risk. Damage to infrastructure makes it difficult to access medical care, water and other basic needs.<\/p>\n

Incidents with UN humanitarian missions<\/h2>\n

Two serious incidents involving UN vehicles in Ukraine occurred last week. In particular, on 14 May, a clearly marked vehicle that was part of an inter-agency humanitarian mission led by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs was attacked twice in Kherson. The parties were informed about the mission in advance.<\/p>\n

On 12 May, another UN vehicle belonging to a World Food Programme humanitarian convoy was also targeted by a remote-controlled drone. The UN stresses that such incidents violate international law and endanger the lives of humanitarian personnel.<\/p>\n

The ongoing escalation of violence in Ukraine is leading to increasing civilian casualties. Official UN data indicate a serious humanitarian crisis, and the actual number of victims may be even higher due to the difficulty of accessing accurate data in the war zones.<\/p>\n

Violations of international humanitarian law, including attacks on civilians and humanitarian personnel, increase risks for all parties to the conflict. The protection of civilians and compliance with international law remain key requirements of the international community.
