The report, published by the scientists, highlights that only a small part of the planned capacity has been realised, and the next five years are crucial to determine their role in the fight against climate change.

Briefly about the main points

New CO2 removal technologies account for only 0.1% of global air purification.

Their growth rate should exceed the rate of deployment of solar panels.

Only a fifth of the planned capacity was commissioned.

The next five years are critical in determining the role of these technologies.

It will be impossible to limit global warming to 1.5°C without significant technological advances.

Speed of development of carbon removal technologies

According to the study, new methods of removing carbon from the atmosphere account for only 0.1% of the total amount of CO2 removed annually globally. These include machines that directly remove carbon from the air and chemical methods, such as biochar production. The bulk of air purification comes from natural methods, such as tree planting, which is limited by available space.

New technologies are growing by about 40% annually, but this is an initial level that needs to be accelerated. Estimates indicate that the growth rate should be between the rate of deployment of solar panels and electric vehicles, which are the leaders in the rate of adoption of climate technologies.

Slipping behind plans and the critical role of the coming years

Only one-fifth of the capacity planned in recent years has actually been implemented, creating a significant gap between governments' promises and reality. The countries' commitments include removing about 2.7 billion tonnes of carbon by 2035 and 3.6 billion tonnes by 2050, but scientists believe this is not enough to meet the The Paris Agreement.

Scientists emphasise the importance of the next five years in determining the role of these technologies in the global climate balance. The lack of large-scale implementation could make it much more difficult to curb climate change.

Political challenges and corporate responsibility

Report also points to political instability as a factor weakening support for carbon removal technologies. For example, the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement under the Donald Trump and the removal of environmental regulations have undermined the credibility of climate commitments and put pressure on other jurisdictions.

A key player in the new technology market is Microsoft, which buys 82% of all carbon credits of this type. However, the company has temporarily suspended purchases, which scientists believe is a signal of the vulnerability of the support system. Microsoft spokesperson Melanie Nakagawa stressed that changes in the pace of procurement are part of the strategy and that the ambitions remain unchanged.

The importance of carbon removal technologies for the climate future

Removing CO2 is a small but key part of climate strategies, as it helps to offset emissions that are difficult to avoid and to reduce temperatures after a period of excess. Scientists liken it to cleaning up a polluted beach: the best solution is not to pollute, but cleaning up is necessary to repair the damage.

Some methods of carbon removal do not yet guarantee its permanent storage, but even temporary removal helps reduce the impact of short-lived climate pollutants.

Scientists emphasise that without significant development of carbon removal technologies and simultaneous reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, it will be impossible to contain global warming to 1.5°C will be impossible. This is a critical challenge for science, business and politics in the coming decades.

Для
