France does not intend to extend the agreement and is instead proposing a new mechanism for controlling migration.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<div class=\"summary-title\">Briefly about the main points<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>France may terminate its agreement with the UK in October.<\/li>\n<li>The agreement provided for the return of migrants to France in exchange for legal entry.<\/li>\n<li>Human rights activists have criticised the agreement as unfair.<\/li>\n<li>Since the agreement came into force, 921 migrants have been returned to France.<\/li>\n<li>The European Union is proposing a new plan to tackle illegal migration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A controversial agreement between Britain and France<\/h2>\n<p>The \u00abone in, one out\u00bb agreement between the UK and France was intended to curb illegal migration across the English Channel. Under this arrangement, migrants who had arrived in the UK illegally on small boats could be forcibly returned to France. In exchange, the UK agreed to legally accept other asylum seekers who were in France.<\/p>\n<p>Despite both governments\u00ab intentions to reduce dangerous sea crossings, the agreement has drawn serious criticism from human rights organisations. In particular, M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res described it as a \u00bbcynical trade in human lives\u00ab. Migrants who were returned to France reported instances of psychological distress and threats from people-smugglers.<\/p>\n<h2>France is planning a new mechanism<\/h2>\n<p>According to the French newspaper *Le Monde*, there are no plans to extend the agreement beyond October 2026. Paris is pinning its hopes on the European Commission\u2019s new action plan, presented on 18 June, which envisages a more coordinated EU-wide policy on <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/world\/hegshet-migracia-visadka-normandiya\/\">illegal migration<\/a> and border control. The UK Home Office has confirmed that the agreement has been extended until the autumn and will remain in force throughout the summer season.<\/p>\n<h2>The flow of migrants remains high<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the introduction of the agreement, the number of illegal crossings of the English Channel remains high. Since the scheme came into force in September last year up to 9 June 2026, 921 migrants have been returned to France, whilst 896 people have been granted legal entry to the UK. In the week from 15 to 22 June alone, the British authorities recorded the arrival of 1,939 asylum seekers on small
