This decision was the result of an investigation being conducted by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor\u2019s Office (SAPO).<\/p>\n<p>The investigation regards the case concerning the activities of illegal call centres as part of a corruption scheme in which Tishchenko, using his status as a Member of Parliament as a cover, demanded bribes in exchange for \u00abimmunity\u00bb for the organisations under his control. According to the materials of the criminal proceedings, in August 2023 he offered intermediaries protection from law enforcement agencies in exchange for over 1 million dollars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px !important; font-style: italic !important; color: #444444 !important; line-height: 1.6 !important; text-transform: none !important; border-left: 4px solid #888888 !important; padding-left: 18px !important; margin: 25px 0 !important; display: block !important;\">\u00abThis is not simply a fight against fraud, but a tool for extorting bribes,\u00bb the prosecutors noted during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Tishchenko promised to use parliamentary questions and exert pressure on law enforcement agencies to eliminate his competitors. According to the investigation, those involved in the scheme actively used code words to refer to bribes. For example, 50,000 euros for carrying out a \u00abtailored\u00bb search.<\/p>\n<h2>The parties\u2019 positions in court<\/h2>\n<p>The parties expressed diametrically opposed views during the court hearing. The prosecution insisted on the strictest preventive measure, demanding remand in custody with an alternative bail of 19 million hryvnias, arguing that there was a risk of the suspect absconding.<\/p>\n<p>Tishchenko\u2019s defence team described the charges as absurd, claiming that NABU was acting in the interests of those behind the illegal business. The lawyers requested a less severe measure that did not involve detention.<\/p>\n<p>Mykola Tyshchenko himself denies any wrongdoing, describing the case as a set-up aimed at discrediting him politically. He emphasised that all the charges are unfounded.<\/p>\n<h2>What's next?<\/h2>\n<p>A judge at the High Anti-Corruption Court set bail at 10 million hryvnias and also imposed a number of procedural obligations on Tishchenko, including the surrender of his passports for travel abroad. This decision may be appealed to the VAKS Appeals Chamber by both the prosecution and the defence.
