In the Polish city of Wroc\u0142aw, yet another high-profile incident fuelled by ethnic hatred has taken place, sparking a strong public outcry. Attacks on Ukrainians abroad are, unfortunately, becoming an increasingly frequent news story, and this time a 19-year-old man fell victim to an aggressive group of youths. The reason for the brutal beating was simply a conversation in Ukrainian in a public place.<\/p>\n

The incident took place at a location popular with young people \u2014 S\u0142odowa Island (Wyspa S\u0142odowa). The Lower Silesian Police have already opened a criminal investigation and issued a warrant for the arrest of those involved in this crime.<\/p>\n

Details of the attack on S\u0142odowski Island in Wroc\u0142aw<\/h2>\n

According to local law enforcement agencies and Polish media<\/a>, a 19-year-old Ukrainian was out in the city centre. He was approached by a group of people of the same age \u2014 boys and girls of roughly the same age. Upon hearing Ukrainian being spoken, the radicalised group began to provoke the young man, shouting xenophobic insults, and the verbal altercation subsequently escalated into brutal physical violence.<\/p>\n

The young man was caught up with and brutally beaten with kicks and punches to the head and torso. The victim sustained serious injuries and required urgent medical attention. Witnesses to the incident called for paramedics and the police to attend the scene, but the attackers managed to flee before the emergency services arrived.<\/p>\n

The Wroc\u0142aw police have now released CCTV footage in which the suspects\u2019 faces are clearly visible. The police are appealing to anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of the perpetrators to contact their nearest police station. The case is being personally supervised by the city police commander, as Crimes motivated by ethnic or national hatred are punished more severely in Poland than a mere brawl<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Polish human rights activists point out that the majority of such attacks are carried out by teenagers or people under the influence of alcohol, who are influenced by xenophobic stereotypes on social media.<\/p>\n
