It is scheduled to enter circulation on 4 September 2026. According to the Governor of the NBU <strong>Andriy Pyshnyy<\/strong>, the need for a new denomination is linked to changes in the economy, an increase in the volume of cash in circulation, price levels and household incomes.<\/p>\n<h2>The banknote has been fitted with new security features<\/h2>\n<p>The new banknote features more than 20 modern anti-counterfeiting features. The main new feature is the Anima\u2122 Colour polymer security thread in blue and yellow. When the banknote is tilted, the image of the Trident smoothly changes to the hryvnia symbol \u20b4. An optically variable element called SPARK is also used, which changes colour and creates a kinetic effect when the viewing angle changes. These technologies are designed to make counterfeiting the banknote significantly more difficult.<\/p>\n<h2>The banknote features a portrait of Vasyl Stus<\/h2>\n<p>The front of the new banknote features a portrait of a Ukrainian poet, human rights activist and dissident <strong>Vasyl Stus<\/strong>. The NBU has thus continued its series of banknotes dedicated to prominent figures in Ukrainian history and culture.<\/p>\n<h2>Will the new banknote have an impact on inflation?<\/h2>\n<p>Andriy Pyshnyy emphasised that the introduction of the new denomination does not mean an additional issue of the hryvnia. According to him, the banknote will be used to replace some of the cash in other denominations and non-cash funds, and will therefore not have an independent inflationary effect. The Governor of the NBU also explained that the volume of cash in circulation had risen from almost 390 billion hryvnias in 2019 to over 970 billion hryvnias, whilst the average wage in the country exceeded 31,000 hryvnias, which was one of the factors behind the expansion of the denomination range.<\/p>\n<h2>Why it matters<\/h2>\n<p>The introduction of the 2,000-hryvnia banknote marks the biggest change in Ukraine\u2019s cash circulation since the 1,000-hryvnia note was introduced. In <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/suspilstvo\/nbu-zmini-pravila-popovnennya-kartok\/\">NBU<\/a> It is expected that the new denomination will make large cash transactions more convenient, whilst modern security features will enhance the hryvnia\u2019s protection against counterfeiting.
