The order remains in force until 1 August inclusive and prohibits, in particular, washing cars outside car washes, filling private swimming pools and watering lawns. Certain offences may result in a fine of up to 50,000 euros.

Briefly about the main points

The mandatory order came into force on 14 July.

The measure is formally in force until 1 August inclusive, but it may be lifted earlier.

Watering private lawns is completely prohibited.

Gardens may only be watered outside the hours of 09:00–19:00.

The maximum fine does not mean that everyone will automatically be fined.

What restrictions have been introduced?

The municipal by-law applies to water from the centralised water supply system, as well as to the abstraction of groundwater and surface water within the boundaries of Munich. It is to be implemented with immediate effect: lodging an appeal does not suspend the validity of the regulations.

It is prohibited to wash cars outside designated car washes, or to fill private swimming pools, fountains and other water features. Private individuals are also not permitted to use water to clean terraces, building facades, roads, courtyards, roofs and technical equipment. Construction sites and access roads must not be watered to control dust unless specifically required by the authorities.

Watering was only permitted during specific times

In private gardens, vegetable gardens and allotments, watering is prohibited between 09:00 and 19:00. At the same time, lawns and other green spaces for private use may not be watered at all.

Exceptions to the temporary ban are provided for, in particular, drip irrigation, agricultural and forestry land, cemeteries, and areas used for commercial or public purposes. Sports grounds are among the explicitly listed exceptions to the total ban on watering lawns.

The strain on the water supply has increased again

According to the city’s figures, on 14 July water consumption exceeded 360 million litres per day. The authorities estimate the usual level to be around 300 million litres, so the current figure is at least 20% higher than that mark.

Lord Mayor Dominic Krause He attributed the strain to the exceptionally dry winter and spring. At the end of June, Stadtwerke München reported isolated peaks of over 400 million litres a day and urged people to reserve drinking water for drinking, cooking, hygiene and medical needs.

Voluntary calls for energy saving had some effect: on 7 July, the city authorities reported a fall in consumption. However, as of 14 July, demand had risen again, and the situation, according to the city council, remained tense.

The fountains have reduced their operating hours, but the water supply has not been cut off

The city had previously switched off 10 of its 150 ornamental fountains and restricted the operating hours of a further 56 to between 10:00 and 20:00. Therefore, the claim that all public fountains have been switched off does not correspond to the official information. The city authorities have also reduced or stopped watering municipal green spaces and have stopped washing the vehicle fleet and the windows of municipal buildings.

There have been no official announcements regarding the suspension of drinking water supplies to the public. On 7 July, Krause stated that the city’s water supply was guaranteed. The authorities did not consider the short-lived showers and thunderstorms forecast for mid-July to be grounds for a rapid easing of the restrictions, as they do not allow for the rapid replenishment of groundwater.

Duration of the regime and possible exceptions

The measures have been put in place until 1 August inclusive. They may be lifted earlier if the situation improves, or extended in the event of a prolonged drought. Upon application, the city may grant a temporary exemption where this is required in the overriding public interest or where the ban would have a disproportionately severe impact on the applicant.

The maximum fine of 50,000 euros is the legally permissible limit for a specific offence, rather than a fixed amount in each case. SWM also announced cost-saving measures across its entire network, including areas outside Munich’s administrative boundaries, but the city’s statement did not set out detailed rules for these areas.

Munich has restricted water use until 1 August due to the drought: watering lawns, filling swimming pools and washing cars are prohibited.

Мюнхен обмежив використання води до 1 серпня через посуху: заборонені полив газонів, наповнення басейнів і миття авто.
[805619
805624
post-24631","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world","tag-805624
["GET
