Following the Orthodox Church of Ukraine\u2019s switch to the New Julian calendar, the date has shifted by 13 days \u2014 the feast day previously fell on 29 August. This day combines the Christian tradition of honouring the Miraculous Image of Jesus Christ with ancient folk customs marking the end of the harvest, the gathering of nuts and the baking of bread from the new harvest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"565\"><strong data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"565\">Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"971\">\n<li data-section-id=\"sahw20\" data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"616\">Nut Spas will be celebrated on 16 August 2026.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"sykcj0\" data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"668\">According to the old calendar, the date fell on 29 August.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"135b37u\" data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"731\">The feast is also known as the Bread, Third or Linen Saviour.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"a2vura\" data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"807\">Traditionally, on this day, people would bake bread from the new harvest and gather nuts.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"fqxmjs\" data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"889\">In the Christian tradition, this day is associated with the Miraculous Image of Jesus Christ.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"qa42o0\" data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"971\">The Church does not impose any specific restrictions on work or household chores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"7bh5dh\" data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1007\">When is Walnut Spas in 2026?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1202\">Nut Spas is the third in the traditional cycle of the August Spas. The first to be celebrated is <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/lifestyle\/medovyi-spas-2026-koly-sviatkuiut-tradytsii-zaborony\/\">Honey Spas<\/a>, or Makoviya, 1 August, the second \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/lifestyle\/yabluchnyi-spas-2026-data-tradytsii\/\">Apple Spas<\/a> 6 August, and this concludes the series <strong>Walnut Spas, 16 August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1204\" data-end=\"1533\">The name \u00abGorikhovy\u00bb (Nut) stems from folk tradition and is linked to the period when nuts ripen and are harvested. \u00abKhlibny\u00bb Spas was so called because of the custom of baking the first bread from flour of the new harvest. The name \u00abLinen Spas\u00bb is also used, linked to the tradition of trading in linen and holding fairs.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1b7t5of\" data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1562\">What are the origins of the festival?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1861\">In the Church tradition, 16 August is associated with the transfer of the Image Not Made by Human Hands <strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong> from Edessa to Constantinople. It is this event that forms the basis of the day\u2019s religious significance, whilst the common names \u00abNut Saviour\u00bb and \u00abBread Saviour\u00bb have developed within folk culture.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"2093\">Thus, the modern celebration combines two layers of tradition \u2014 Christian and folk-agrarian. For Ukrainians, the end of summer has long been an important time marking the completion of field work, the harvest and the preparation of supplies for autumn and winter.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"h0agn6\" data-start=\"2095\" data-end=\"2137\">What people traditionally do on Walnut Spas Day<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2139\" data-end=\"2351\">One of the main traditions was baking homemade bread from flour made from the new harvest. The family would gather round the table, give thanks for the harvest, and it was customary to share the bread with loved ones and those in need.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2705\">By this time, the active harvesting of ripe nuts had also begun. They were stored for the winter and used in festive dishes and baked goods. In some areas, people would bring nuts, ears of corn and bread to the church. Folk traditions also associate this period with fairs, the sale of linen and preparing the farm for autumn.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"vmkpqk\" data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2751\">What you can and shouldn\u2019t do on 16 August<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2753\" data-end=\"2914\">On Walnut Spas, you can attend a church service, spend time with your family, bake bread or prepare dishes with walnuts, share food and help those in need.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"3199\">At the same time, the claims circulating online about a strict ban on working, cleaning, sewing or carrying out other household chores are mainly based on folk beliefs rather than official church regulations. For believers, the spiritual significance of the day, prayer and good deeds are considered more important.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3201\" data-end=\"3443\">According to popular belief, people also tried to avoid quarrels, foul language, envy and refusing to help those in need on this feast day. These customs are in line with general Christian teachings, although they are not specific prohibitions unique to the Feast of the Nuts.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"ggvmgw\" data-start=\"3445\" data-end=\"3496\">From the bread of the new harvest to modern celebrations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3498\" data-end=\"3769\">For many Ukrainians, Nut-Gathering Day remains, above all, a cultural and family tradition. The customs of baking bread, gathering nuts and giving thanks for the harvest serve as a reminder of the country\u2019s agricultural past, when the end of summer directly determined a family\u2019s well-being for the months to come.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"4012\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">At the same time, it is important to distinguish between the religious significance of the feast and the folk customs that have developed over the centuries.
