The agency described this as a threat to people and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The data released by the SBU on 23 July adds to previously reported incidents. According to the agency, six additional incidents of attacks were recorded in the Chernihiv region between April and June 2026, involving R-60M missiles adapted for use on drones. Gamma radiation levels ranging from 8.3 to 24 microsieverts per hour were reported for some of the debris.<\/p>\n<p>The SBU had previously also reported two incidents in the Sumy region. According to its information, forensic analysis revealed 2,810 grams of depleted uranium projectiles in the warheads of the missiles.<\/p>\n<h2>What risks does uranium dust pose?<\/h2>\n<p>The SBU listed the following among the possible consequences: inhalation of dust, lung damage, toxic effects on the kidneys, and a long-term risk of cancer of the lungs and bone tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Depleted uranium is a dense, heavy metal and a by-product of uranium enrichment. As explained in relevant WHO publications and <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/main-news\/%d0%bc%d0%b0%d0%b3%d0%b0%d1%82%d0%b5-%d1%81%d0%b8%d1%82%d1%83%d0%b0%d1%86%d1%96%d1%8f-%d0%bd%d0%b0-%d0%b7%d0%b0%d0%b5%d1%81-%d0%bb%d0%b8%d1%88%d0%b0%d1%94%d1%82%d1%8c%d1%81%d1%8f-%d1%81%d0%b5%d1%80\/\">IAEA<\/a>, it is important to distinguish between external gamma radiation and the risk posed by particles entering the body. The most significant risks are associated specifically with the inhalation or ingestion of dust, and the toxic effects of uranium primarily affect the kidneys.<\/p>\n<p>The reading in microsieverts per hour describes the dose rate at a specific point and at the time of measurement. It is not the same as the individual dose a person might have received: such an assessment requires data on the duration of exposure, distance, the area of contamination, the presence of dust and the results of sample analyses.<\/p>\n<h2>Investigations and safety regulations<\/h2>\n<p>The SBU reports that it is investigating these incidents under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which deals with war crimes. According to the agency, any hazardous components are neutralised once detected.<\/p>\n<p>The service urges members of the public not to touch or move any debris from drones, rockets or ammunition. If such objects are found, you should move to a safe distance and report them to the SBU on 1516, the State Emergency Service on 101 or the police on 102.<\/p>\n<h2>Detailed surveys are required to assess the level of contamination<\/h2>\n<p>The sequence of incidents reported by the SBU in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions may indicate a recurring method of equipping specific modified missiles for drones, rather than an isolated discovery. At the same time, the extent of contamination at each site can only be assessed following radiological and chemical testing.<\/p>\n<p>UNEP notes that, following an impact, some of this material may turn into dust and potentially contaminate the air, soil, water and vegetation. Historical assessments by the WHO indicate that contamination is often localised; however, affected areas require measurement, monitoring and, where necessary, decontamination.<\/p>\n<p>Depleted uranium munitions are not nuclear weapons.
