He emphasised that Ukrainians are defending their homes, whilst Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, according to him, aims to restore the USSR within its former borders.<\/p>\n In an interview, Zelenskyy recalled that Ukraine had been completely occupied both during the Soviet era and during the Second World War. According to him, eight million Ukrainians were killed at that time, and during the Holodomor, Russia killed more than six million Ukrainians.<\/p>\n The President rejected the image of Russia as a defender of Christianity. He stated that for centuries Russia has been invading other countries\u2019 territories, by destroying churches<\/a>, traditions and language.<\/p>\n Zelenskyy stated that, since the start of Donald Trump\u2019s second term, Ukraine had been purchasing weapons from the US, notably through the PURL programme, and described this as a mutually beneficial partnership.<\/p>\n PURL<\/a> \u2014 is a mechanism launched by the US and NATO in July 2025. Ukraine draws up a list of urgent requirements, the packages are agreed upon by Kyiv, Washington and NATO, and the procurement of American weapons is funded by allies and partners. According to data from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence dated 23 July, 29 countries have joined the programme, with total contributions reaching $6.7 billion.<\/p>\n The Ministry of Defence also estimates that around 95% Patriot interceptor missiles are being supplied via the PURL. Against the backdrop of a rising death toll from long-range attacks, the regularity of such funding could have a direct impact on the ability to defend cities.<\/p>\n The President announced that Ukraine is seeking to conclude a major drone deal with the United States. The Ukrainian side has already provided the US with naval and long-range drones<\/a> for testing.<\/p>\n According to Zelenskyy, the US\u2019s support for Ukraine has provided it with unique military experience without any American casualties and saved 20 years of development work. He added that Ukrainian drone technology continues to evolve, and the dynamics of combat operations are changing approaches to the use of drones every three to six months.<\/p>\n Technical work on the collaboration is already underway.
