A key element of this is to be the supply of Canadian liquefied natural gas to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Officials discussed the preparation and benefits of a long-term strategic agreement in the energy sector, to run for 30 years. This discussion followed on from the President\u2019s agreements <strong>Vladimir Zelensky<\/strong> and the Prime Minister of Canada <strong>Mark Carney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for gas procurement ahead of winter<\/h2>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s preparations for the next one have become a topic in their own right <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/economics\/drone-deal-reformy-energetyka-yes\/\">the winter season<\/a>. The parties discussed the possibility of Canada providing direct grant support for the purchase of gas worth 650 million Canadian dollars as part of this year\u2019s overall aid package to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion centres specifically on the possibility of such funding. No decision by Canada to allocate these funds, the conditions for their provision or the mechanism for their administration has yet been made public in open sources.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has also offered Canadian suppliers the use of Ukrainian gas storage facilities. Ukraine\u2019s gas transmission system operator describes the country\u2019s underground storage facilities as the largest in Europe and regards them, together with the gas transmission system, as a source of flexibility for the regional market.<\/p>\n<h2>A framework for cooperation has already been agreed<\/h2>\n<p>The gas and nuclear sectors are already covered by the memorandum of strategic cooperation in the energy sector, which was signed by Natural Resources Canada and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine on 18 February 2026. The document provides for alternative gas routes, the diversification of LNG sources, the modernisation of infrastructure and the long-term use of Ukrainian gas storage facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The nuclear track of the memorandum covers commercial cooperation on raw materials and components for nuclear fuel, as well as the exchange of expertise on radiation safety and waste management. It also provides for cooperation on the restoration of Ukraine\u2019s nuclear infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2>How LNG can be supplied to Ukraine<\/h2>\n<p>The parties did not disclose the specific route for the Canadian LNG, the names of the terminals, the traders or the capacity reserved. At the same time, Ukraine has already tested a model for supplying LNG via European infrastructure: in 2025, around 400 million cubic metres of US LNG were delivered via Lithuania and Poland, according to the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Related routes are also being developed to facilitate future imports. Gas transmission system operators have agreed on a tariff framework for the Vertical Corridor through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, which is due to come into effect on 1 October 2026. OGTSU is also preparing to increase transmission capacity on the Polish route.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Canadian LNG does not appear to be a quick physical solution for the coming winter. The earliest known long-term agreement between Canada and a European buyer does not envisage deliveries commencing until the early 2030s.
