Manufacturers promise multi-gigabit speeds, minimal latency and stable performance for dozens of devices simultaneously. However, the actual performance depends on more than just the ‘Wi-Fi 7’ label on the box.

Let’s take a look at how the new standard differs from Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, who needs it right now, and what to look out for when choosing a router.

What is Wi-Fi 7 and how is it different?

Wi-Fi 7 — the commercial name for the IEEE 802.11be standard, also known as Extremely High Throughput. It was developed to improve not only the maximum speed but also the stability of connections on congested networks.

The IEEE has incorporated an operating mode with a throughput of over 30 Gbit/s into the standard, whilst maintaining compatibility with previous generations of equipment. Consumer device manufacturers quote a theoretical maximum of 46 Gbit/s. This is an aggregate laboratory figure, not the speed that a single smartphone will achieve in a flat.

On which bands does Wi-Fi 7 operate?

The standard may use three ranges:

2.4 GHz — wider coverage area, but lower speed;

5 GHz — the ideal balance between speed and range;

6 GHz — the highest bandwidth and less interference, but the signal does not penetrate walls as well.

The fact that Wi-Fi 7 is available does not mean that every router necessarily supports all three bands. The availability of the 6 GHz band also depends on regional regulations and the specifications of the specific equipment.

Key features of Wi-Fi 7

Channels up to 320 MHz wide

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E support channels of up to 160 MHz, whilst Wi-Fi 7 increases the maximum channel width to 320 MHz in the 6 GHz band. This is like widening a road: more data can pass through it at the same time.

Wider channels are particularly useful for quickly copying large files, working with home servers, streaming high-quality video and connecting virtual reality headsets wirelessly.

Multi-Link Operation

Technology Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, allows a compatible device to use multiple wireless channels or bands.

For example, a laptop can transmit data over both the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands, rather than being limited to a single connection. Depending on the implementation, MLO increases speed, reduces latency or allows a congested channel to be bypassed quickly.

This is one of the key differences with Wi-Fi 7. It can improve the stability of video calls, cloud gaming and other applications that are sensitive to low latency.

4096-QAM modulation

Wi-Fi 7 supports 4096-QAM, whereas Wi-Fi 6 uses 1024-QAM. The new scheme allows approximately 20% more data to be transmitted in each radio signal.

However, this advantage is most evident at a short distance from the router, where the signal is strong. When there are several concrete walls in the way, the device may automatically switch to a simpler modulation scheme.

More efficient use of the occupied channel

In a real-world home, part of a wide channel may be occupied by neighbouring networks or other sources of interference. Wi-Fi 7 is able to make more efficient use of its free sections, without having to abandon the entire channel due to a problem in a specific part of the spectrum.

This is important for blocks of flats, where dozens of routers are in operation at the same time.

Wi-Fi 7 versus Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E

Characteristics

Wi-Fi 6

Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 7

Standard

802.11ax

802.11ax

802.11be

Ranges

2.4 and 5 GHz

2.4, 5 and 6 GHz

2.4, 5 and 6 GHz

Maximum channel width

160 MHz

160 MHz

320 MHz

Modulation

1024-QAM

1024-QAM

4096-QAM

Multi-Link Operation

No

No

Yes

Theoretical maximum speed

9.6 Gb/s

9.6 Gb/s

Up to 46 Gbit/s

The main advantage

Network efficiency

Access to 6 GHz

Speed, MLO and lower latency

Wi-Fi 6E is not a separate generation of connectivity. The new router will simply distribute the available bandwidth more efficiently.

Who should switch to Wi-Fi 7?

To owners of multi-gigabit internet connections

A next-generation router is worth considering for a broadband package of 1 Gbit/s or more, and its full potential is realised with connections of 2.5, 5 or 10 Gbit/s.

It is important to check the ports: a model with a Gigabit WAN port will not be physically capable of utilising the full 2.5 Gbit/s connection speed.

Home server users

Wi-Fi 7 can speed up file transfers to a NAS, photo backups and work on large video projects. For this to work, the server, router and computer must all have the appropriate high-speed interfaces.

For large families and smart homes

The new standard copes better with a large number of simultaneous connections. This is particularly relevant if you have TVs, games consoles, cameras, laptops, smartphones and dozens of smart home devices in use at home.

Gamers and VR users

MLO can reduce latency and improve connection stability. Upgrading to a newer standard won’t always make a noticeable difference.

How to choose a Wi-Fi 7 router

Check the network ports

The minimum requirement for a modern model is a 2.5 GbE port for connecting to your internet service provider and at least one LAN port of the same speed. For a home server and broadband plans offering speeds of over 2.5 Gbit/s, you should consider equipment with 10 GbE.

Find out whether you need the 6 GHz band

It is at 6 GHz that the widest channels are available. However, this signal has a shorter range, so a large house may require a mesh system with several access points.

Don’t focus solely on the number after ‘BE’

Designations such as BE6500 or BE19000 refer to the total theoretical speed across all bands. A single device will not necessarily achieve the full advertised speed.

Check for MLO support

Not all early models support Multi-Link Operation in the same way. It is worth checking the specifications of your particular router, information on firmware updates and the list of features available in your region.

Take the floor area into account

An expensive router isn’t always better than a well-positioned mesh system. For a multi-storey house or a flat with a complex layout, coverage quality may be more important than maximum speed right next to the router.

How to check if your device supports Wi-Fi 7

When checking the specifications of a smartphone, laptop or network adapter, look for the following designations:

Wi-Fi 7;

IEEE 802.11be;

Multi-Link Operation;

support for 320 MHz channels;

Operates in the 6 GHz band.

Support must come from both sides. A new smartphone with Wi-Fi 7 will work with an older router, but will connect at the speed of the previous standard. Similarly, an older laptop can be connected to a new router, but it will not use MLO or 320 MHz channels.

Is it worth buying Wi-Fi 7 right now?

Wi-Fi 7 is no longer purely an experimental technology, but it is not a worthwhile purchase for everyone. If you’re buying a router to last for several years, and you have a gigabit internet connection, modern devices or a home server, the new standard will be a sensible investment.

However, if Wi-Fi 6 provides consistent coverage throughout your home and your broadband speed is several hundred megabits, there is no urgent need to upgrade.
