He did not specify the venue, the participants or a deadline for reaching an agreement. Washington is linking a possible deal to the full restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the resolution of the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

Briefly about the main points

Trump announced the start of talks with Iran on Monday.

The US President did not set a deadline for reaching an agreement.

Tehran discussed diplomatic efforts with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Iran is separating the debate on the new route from the issue of opening the strait.

Oil prices fell by more than 4% at the start of trading on Monday.

Washington is seeking an agreement with no set deadline

On the start of negotiations Donald Trump told journalists on board Air Force One, whilst returning to Washington after a weekend in New Jersey. On Saturday, he wrote on Truth Social that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had asked for time to finalise the deal.

The president had previously stated that he had called off an imminent strike in the hope of reaching an agreement quickly. When asked about a deadline, he said he would prefer to reach an agreement rather than kill people: «People are dying, a great many people are dying, and we do not want that.».

Trump has on several occasions threatened to intensify the war against Iran, which the US had launched alongside Israel at the end of February, whilst at the same time allowing more time for diplomacy. Previous talks had not led to a comprehensive agreement.

Iran is discussing diplomatic contacts, whilst Israel maintains a hardline stance

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Abbas Araghchi held telephone conversations with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Chief of the Pakistani Army Asim Munir, according to Iranian state media. IRNA had previously reported that talks between Tehran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz were in their final stages.

Spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmail Baghai stated that these negotiations are focusing on agreeing a new route through the strait. According to him, this is a separate issue from whether the strait is opened or closed. Last month, Tehran publicly rejected an Omani proposal backed by the Gulf states; it involved voluntary payments for the use of the route.

Israel’s Energy Minister Eli Cohen has stated that Israel and the US are coordinating closely on security and intelligence matters. He added that Israel would strike if Iran attempted to resume its nuclear programme or develop its ballistic missile industry. Tehran denies that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key factor for the energy market

Iran has largely closed Strait of Hormuz — a route through which, prior to the war, around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed. This led to a rise in energy prices and exacerbated inflationary pressures. According to estimates by the US Energy Information Administration, an average of 20.9 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through the strait every day in the first half of 2025.

The markets reacted to the news of possible negotiations by seeing oil prices fall: at the start of trading on Monday, prices dropped by more than 4%. This may reflect expectations of a lower risk of disruptions, but does not confirm a forthcoming agreement or a swift resumption of transit.

For Asian countries, this is a particularly sensitive issue: according to EIA data, 89% of crude oil and condensate passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the first half of 2025 were destined for Asian buyers. Even if a political agreement is reached, the resumption of these flows is likely to be gradual, as the safety of shipping and the operation of energy infrastructure will require specific practical solutions.

Following the announcement of US-Iran talks, the price of oil fell by more than 4%.
