It commemorates the end of the Virgin Mary\u2019s earthly life and her passing into eternity. The feast is also popularly known as the First Assumption. In 2026, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will celebrate the Dormition of the Mother of God <strong>15 August<\/strong>. This year, the holiday falls on a Saturday. Communities that follow the old Julian calendar will celebrate it on 28 August.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<h2>Briefly about the main points<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God will be celebrated on 15 August 2026.<\/li>\n<li>According to the old church calendar, the feast day falls on 28 August.<\/li>\n<li>The Dormition Fast runs from 1 to 14 August inclusive.<\/li>\n<li>On this day, it is customary to attend church services, pray and help those in need.<\/li>\n<li>The Church does not forbid people from working, cleaning, sewing, cutting their hair or using a knife.<\/li>\n<li>The main restrictions relate to arguments, insults, foul language, excessive alcohol consumption and indifference towards others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>When is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 2026?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Following the transition of the OCU and the UGCC to the New Julian calendar, the dates of most non-movable feasts have shifted by 13 days. Therefore, <strong>The Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God<\/strong> they are now celebrating <strong>15 August<\/strong>, rather than 28 August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In the OCU\u2019s church calendar for 2026, the Dormition Fast is set for the period from 1 to 14 August. The following day, 15 August, the faithful celebrate the Dormition itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Some Orthodox parishes continue to follow the Julian calendar. For their parishioners, the date remains the traditional one \u2014 28 August.<\/p>\n<h2>What does the Feast of the Assumption mean?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The word \u00abDormition\u00bb means sleep or the peaceful conclusion of earthly life. In the Christian tradition, the death of the Mother of God is seen not merely as a sorrowful event, but as a transition to eternal life and a reunion with her Son \u2014 <strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to church tradition, before the end of his earthly life <strong>The Virgin Mary<\/strong> received a message from the Archangel Gabriel. The Apostles miraculously gathered around her to bid her farewell and take part in her burial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That is precisely why the divine service on this day combines mourning with bright hope. In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the feast is described as a reminder of the victory of life over death and the hope of the Resurrection. <a href=\"https:\/\/synod.ugcc.ua\/data\/epyskop-yaroslav-pryriz-uspennya-presvyatoy-bogorodytsi-yak-svyato-nadiy-ta-peremogy-17781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statement by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Traditions on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The main church tradition is taking part in the festive Divine Liturgy. The faithful turn to the Mother of God with prayers for good health, protection for their families, support for the armed forces, the return of prisoners of war, and the establishment of a just peace in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In some churches, an all-night vigil is held on the eve of the feast, and during the services, a shroud bearing an image of the Mother of God is brought out. In monasteries and major places of worship, processions and a ceremony for the burial of the shroud may be held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It is customary on this day to:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>visit a church or pray at home;<\/li>\n<li>light a candle for the health of loved ones;<\/li>\n<li>to remember deceased relatives in prayer;<\/li>\n<li>to make peace with the people with whom a conflict has arisen;<\/li>\n<li>to help the lonely, the sick and the needy;<\/li>\n<li>to spend time with the family without arguments or excessive entertainment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In the folk calendar, the Assumption is known as <strong>The First Feast of the Immaculate Conception<\/strong>. The festival was associated with the completion of the main field work, giving thanks for the harvest and the beginning of the transition from summer to autumn. However, these customs should be distinguished from the religious significance of the festival.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it allowed to eat meat on the Feast of the Assumption?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/lifestyle\/medovyi-spas-2026-koly-sviatkuiut-tradytsii-zaborony\/\">The Dormition Fast<\/a> ends on 14 August. Consequently, on 15 August 2026, the fast will no longer be in force, so believers may eat meat and dairy products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">At the same time, the end of Lent does not mean that the celebrations should turn into excessive feasting. The Church urges people to exercise moderation, not to abuse alcohol, and to bear in mind the spiritual significance of the feast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">People with medical conditions, pregnant women, children, members of the armed forces and those engaged in heavy physical labour may observe the fast with some concessions. It is advisable to discuss dietary restrictions with a priest and a doctor.<\/p>\n<h2>Things you must not do on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The most important restrictions on this day relate not to household chores, but to one\u2019s behaviour. You should not:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>to argue, insult others and provoke conflicts;<\/li>\n<li>to use foul language and spread rumours;<\/li>\n<li>to refuse to help someone who needs it;<\/li>\n<li>to abuse alcohol;<\/li>\n<li>to reduce a celebration to nothing more than a boisterous feast;<\/li>\n<li>to wish others ill or to seek revenge;<\/li>\n<li>to practise divination and other occult practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In popular calendars, one may come across the claim that on the Feast of the Dormition, one must not sew, cut bread with a knife, tidy up, cut one\u2019s hair, walk barefoot or wear old shoes. Such rules are folk superstitions and are not official church prohibitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Church does not prohibit essential work, preparing food, or looking after children or the sick. If a person is on duty, defending Ukraine, working as a doctor or a rescue worker, or carrying out other urgent duties, this is not considered a breach of the holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Where possible, difficult non-essential work can be postponed in order to make time for worship, prayer and family. However, the purpose of such a decision lies not in fear of punishment, but in the desire to devote the day to spiritual life.<\/p>\n<h2>Prayer to the Mother of God on the Feast of the Dormition<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You can pray in a church or at home, with or without an icon. What matters is sincerity, focus and being mindful of the words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>A short prayer for the Dormition:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Most Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, accept our sincere prayer. Protect our families, sustain the sick, the wounded and the captives, and strengthen Ukraine\u2019s defenders. Grant us patience, wisdom and peace in our hearts. Pray to Your Son for Ukraine and its people. Amen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You can also recite the well-known prayer:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Hail, O Virgin Mother of God; hail, O Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast brought forth the Saviour of our souls.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">On this feast day, the Akathist to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, Psalm 50, and prayers for the health of loved ones and for the repose of the departed are recited.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it possible to have a church wedding and celebrate the wedding?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Dormition Fast ends on 14 August, but you should check in advance with the specific church regarding the possibility of a wedding on 15 August. Weddings are not usually held on major church feast days due to the special liturgical schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Civil <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/vazhlyvo-znaty\/novyj-tsyvilnyj-kodeks-stefanchuk\/\">marriage registration<\/a> The Church does not prohibit family celebrations. At the same time, believers may choose a different date for their wedding so that it does not coincide with a major feast day.<\/p>\n<h2>Folk traditions associated with the Assumption<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In folk tradition, people used to try to predict the autumn based on the weather on the First Feast of the Purification:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>A clear day was associated with a warm autumn;<\/li>\n<li>Fog was considered a sign of a good mushroom harvest;<\/li>\n<li>a rainbow was seen as a sign of prolonged warm weather;<\/li>\n<li>Rain was associated with a cool and damp autumn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">These superstitions are part of folklore, not a scientific weather forecast or a religious doctrine.<\/p>\n<h2>How to observe the Assumption of the Virgin Mary properly<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God should be observed in a peaceful manner, without fear of the numerous everyday \u00abprohibitions\u00bb. The essence of the feast remains prayer, participation in the divine service, reconciliation and helping one\u2019s neighbour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A person can work, cook and carry out household chores if circumstances require it. It is far more important to refrain from anger, from belittling others and from being indifferent to other people\u2019s suffering.<\/p>\n<p>This feast reminds Christians that the end of earthly life is not a final defeat. That is why the Dormition combines the commemoration of the Mother of God\u2019s death with the hope of resurrection and eternal
