According to the investigation, he was gathering photographs and geolocation data on petrol stations in the Poltava region for the Russian Federation, and also passed on information regarding the location of his military unit. He has been charged with treason.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<p><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The SBU has announced that it has uncovered a Russian GRU agent within the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/li>\n<li>The suspect was collecting photos and geolocation data of petrol stations in the Poltava region.<\/li>\n<li>He also disclosed the location of his military unit to the Russian Federation.<\/li>\n<li>The soldier was arrested at his place of duty.<\/li>\n<li>He faces life imprisonment and the forfeiture of his property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Recruitment via Telegram and the collection of contact details<\/h2>\n<p>According to the SBU, the suspect had been mobilised into the technical support platoon of a local military unit. The investigation claims that he came to the attention of Russian military intelligence due to anti-Ukrainian comments he made in the chat rooms of Telegram channels.<\/p>\n<p>After being recruited, the soldier would patrol the area during his daily leave and send up-to-date photographs and geolocation data of petrol stations to the Russian side. His tasks also included gathering data on the Defence Forces\u2019 bases and redeployments in central Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The SBU\u2019s counter-intelligence unit detained him at his place of work. According to the agency, a mobile phone containing evidence of his collaboration with the enemy was seized during a search.<\/p>\n<h2>The case is being investigated under the section of the law relating to treason<\/h2>\n<p>Investigators have charged the soldier under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code \u2014 high treason committed under martial law. The penalty under this provision is 15 years\u2019 imprisonment or life imprisonment with confiscation of property; the SBU states that the suspect faces a life sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Comprehensive operations were carried out by military counter-intelligence and SBU investigators in the Poltava region, in cooperation with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Poltava Specialised Prosecutor\u2019s Office for Defence Matters is overseeing the proceedings.<\/p>\n<h2>Attacks on petrol stations were a regular occurrence in July<\/h2>\n<p>The arrest took place against the backdrop of a series of Russian attacks on petrol stations in the region. In July <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/suspilstvo\/znyshcheni-azs-trasa-kharkiv-poltava\/\">strikes on such targets<\/a> were recorded in the Poltava and Lubny districts: specifically, on 3 July in the Lubny district, six people were reported to have been injured following attacks, whilst on 25 July, Russian drones damaged four petrol stations in the Poltava district.<\/p>\n<p>The frequency of such strikes suggests that up-to-date photographs and the coordinates of petrol stations may have been of practical value to Russian forces.
