According to one of them, just under half of the global stockpile of Tomahawk missiles has also been used since the start of the conflict. Some officials fear that this could limit the US’s ability to respond to other crises.

Briefly about the main points

According to sources, US stocks of ATACMS and PrSM are almost depleted.

Since the start of the war, the stockpile of Tomahawk missiles has fallen by just under half.

CSIS has estimated the cost of the Patriot interceptors at approximately 65%.

The White House and the Pentagon have stated that the US arsenal is sufficient.

Raytheon has reached a preliminary agreement with the Pentagon to increase production of the Tomahawk.

Long-range missiles reduced the need for strikes by manned aircraft

ATACMS and PrSM are ground-to-ground missiles that enable precision strikes from a distance. Each one costs over $1 million. One of the sources speaking to Reuters said that the intensive use of these weapons reflected a decision by the administration Donald Trump to avoid riskier attacks by manned aircraft.

According to analysts, such munitions would be particularly valuable in a conflict with an adversary possessing a strong air defence system, such as China. A March report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted that they had been used to strike targets in Iran.

The PrSM is a newer system intended to replace the ATACMS, which has a shorter range. CSIS noted that initial stocks of the PrSM were limited due to the missile’s relative newness, although the US Army has ordered a significant number of these munitions for 2027. The military has also announced the gradual phasing out of the ATACMS and a shift in production focus towards the PrSM.

The Trump administration says it may expand its arsenal

A well-informed source has reported that US Central Command has been replenishing its stocks from American military reserves in various parts of the world. At the same time, data on stock levels over the past week have been discussed within the federal government against the backdrop of debates over how long the US will be able to continue strikes on Iran without limiting the ability to respond in other regions.

In a statement to Reuters, Trump said that the United States has «far more ammunition than anyone else in the world» and more than it needs. He added that defence companies are increasing production and manufacturing capacity at a record pace.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the US military has everything it needs to carry out its missions at the time and place chosen by the President, whilst retaining a significant arsenal of capabilities to protect the people and interests of the United States. Analysts agree that production of certain types of missiles and artillery shells has risen to record levels, but warn that stocks may not be sufficient for a protracted war.

Patriot and THAAD stocks have also fallen amid controversy over new strikes

Last week, CSIS estimated that between February and July, the US spent around 65% on interceptors Patriot, whilst the stockpile of THAAD interceptors has fallen by at least 38% compared with the start of the war. Reuters has not seen internal data on stockpiles, but two sources said that the CSIS estimate is consistent with their own figures.

According to two of the agency’s sources, military leaders had been warning the president for weeks about dwindling stocks of defence systems, particularly the Patriot system. Several media outlets reported that Trump had not approved a new large-scale offensive in Iran, partly because of these warnings. An American official denied this explanation, stating that the decision was linked to pressure from Gulf states.

The conflict has also sparked a debate over the President’s powers to wage war against Iran without Congress’s authorisation. No requests have been made to Congress to declare war or to authorise the use of military force.

A long-term agreement is being drawn up to replenish Tomahawk stocks

Tomahawk They are launched from destroyers, cruisers and submarines. They are the US Navy’s primary means of striking well-defended targets without putting pilots at risk.

Raytheon, a division of RTX, has reached a preliminary multi-year agreement with the Pentagon to ramp up production of Tomahawk missiles, alongside other munitions. Raytheon and Lockheed Martin did not provide immediate comment on stock levels or the president’s statements; Reuters sources did not specify the exact number of missiles remaining.

In the war with Iran, the US has almost used up its supply of ATACMS and PrSM missiles and has expended just under half of the global stockpile of Tomahawk missiles.

У війні з Іраном США майже вичерпали ракети ATACMS і PrSM та витратили трохи менше половини глобального запасу Tomahawk.
[805619
806806
post-26497","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world","tag-806806
["GET
