In Russia On the morning of 11 August, the \u00abOrsknefteorgsintez\u00bb oil refinery in Orsk, Orenburg Oblast, was attacked\u00bb<\/strong>. According to preliminary data from monitoring and OSINT sources, Ukrainian long-range drones were used in the strike FP-1<\/strong>, and one of the targets hit could have been the company\u2019s hydrocracking plant.<\/p>\n

The capacity of this unit is 1.6 million tonnes of raw materials per year<\/strong>. This is one of the key facilities in the large-scale modernisation of the Orsk Oil Refinery, which is used for the deep processing of vacuum gas oil and to increase the production of light petroleum products. These details regarding the complex are confirmed on the company\u2019s official website.<\/p>\n

The hydrocracking complex was the first to be affected<\/h2>\n

According to reports circulating on monitoring channels on the morning of 11 August, smoke was observed on the premises of the Orsk Oil Refinery following the strike. It is provisionally reported that the strike hit a hydrocracking complex with a capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the time of publication, there is no independent confirmation of the exact point of impact or the extent of the damage to the unit. Consequently, the information regarding the damage remains preliminary. The official website of the Orsk Oil Refinery states that the hydrocracking unit, which includes a hydrogen production section, is designed for 1.6 million tonnes of raw materials each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why is this facility important for the Orsk Oil Refinery?<\/h2>\n

The hydrocracking unit was at the heart of a major programme to modernise the plant. Its construction was intended to enable the plant to process virtually all of its vacuum gas oil and significantly increase the depth of crude oil refining.<\/p>\n

The plant enables the conversion of heavy oil fractions into higher-value and sought-after light products, primarily components of diesel and other fuels.<\/p>\n

At the time, around 40 billion roubles<\/strong>, whilst the total cost of the modernisation programme for the Orsk Oil Refinery was estimated at approximately 70 billion roubles. The complex was brought into full operational mode in 2018.<\/p>\n

That is precisely why potential damage to this facility could have far more serious consequences for the plant than damage to an ordinary fuel tank.<\/p>\n

The Orsk Oil Refinery processes up to 6.6 million tonnes of crude oil per year<\/h2>\n

\u00abOrsknefteorgsintez\u00bb is the largest oil refinery in the Orenburg Region. Its design capacity is approximately 6.6 million tonnes of oil per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The plant operates four crude oil primary processing units, catalytic reforming units, units for the hydrotreating of diesel fuel and aviation kerosene, as well as units for the production of oils and bitumen. The plant produces over 30 types of petroleum products.<\/p>\n

During previous strikes on this facility, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that it was involved in supplying fuel to the Russian occupying forces.<\/p>\n

The Orsk oil refinery has been attacked before<\/h2>\n

This is not the first long-range attack on the company.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, drones were already reaching \u00abOrsknefteorgsintez\u00bb. At that time, the governor of the Orenburg Region Yevgen Solntsev<\/strong> acknowledged the attack on an industrial facility in Orsk, although he claimed that production had not been disrupted.<\/p>\n

In April 2026, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also confirmed that the Orsk Oil Refinery had been hit and emphasised its importance to the Russian fuel supply system.<\/p>\n

The distance from the Ukrainian border to Orsk is approximately 1,400 km<\/strong>, and depending on the launch point, the actual route of a long-range drone may be considerably longer. During the previous operation, Ukrainian sources also cited a distance of around 1,400 km.<\/p>\n

Reports have been received regarding the use of FP-1<\/h2>\n

Monitoring sources claim that during the latest attack on 11 August, the following were used: Ukrainian FP-1 long-range drones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This type of drone has already been linked to long-range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. In particular, in July FP-1<\/a> were used during the attack on the Omsk oil refinery in Siberia \u2014 one of the longest-range strikes carried out by Ukrainian drones deep into Russian territory.<\/p>\n

If reports of damage to the hydrocracking unit are confirmed, the strike will target not just the plant\u2019s premises, but one of the most technologically valuable components of the Orsk Oil Refinery.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
