The company plans to launch the Apple Intelligence suite of tools in China in the coming months following an iOS update. Having its own model could give Apple greater control over AI features on devices sold in the country.

Briefly about the main points

Apple has developed a separate language model for the Chinese market.

Alibaba supported the training of the model, sources told Reuters.

Apple Intelligence is set to be launched following the iOS update.

The Chinese regulator registered Apple’s generative AI service in July.

The roles of the Apple model, Qwen and Baidu’s technologies remain unclear.

Moving away from relying solely on local models

This new approach differs from Apple’s previous strategy in China, where the company relied on models from local partners for generative features on the iPhone and other devices. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude – which Apple integrates with its own technologies in its home market – are not available in the country.

A customised in-house model potentially gives the manufacturer greater control over the AI experience in its most competitive overseas market. There, Apple is competing, in particular, with Huawei, which is actively developing smartphones with AI features.

At the same time, the technical division of roles between Apple’s model, Qwen and other Chinese technologies has not been disclosed. Apple and Alibaba did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

Regulatory approval has paved the way for the launch, but availability is still limited

A lengthy regulatory process came to an end last month: the Cyberspace Administration of China has registered Apple’s generative AI service. This has paved the way for Apple Intelligence to appear on iPhones in China and, according to Reuters, the planned launch could make Apple the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer its own AI model in the country.

Under the agreed plan, the Qwen model is to be integrated into the Apple Intelligence service for compatible iPhones, iPads, Macs and Vision Pro devices in China. Reuters also reported in July that there were plans to enhance the service with Baidu’s technologies. Apple had previously published a Chinese-language user guide for Mac users on connecting Qwen to Siri and Writing Tools, but subsequently removed it without explanation.

As of 14 August, Apple’s official availability matrix still lists many Apple Intelligence features as unavailable in mainland China. China’s regulations for generative AI include requirements regarding data origin, personal data protection, content moderation, security and interaction with regulatory authorities.

AI features could narrow the gap with local brands

China remains one of the key markets Apple. The lack of AI features on Chinese iPhones was cited as a factor weighing on sales, as buyers switched to local brands with built-in AI assistants. The partnership between Apple and Alibaba was publicly confirmed by Alibaba’s chairman, Joe Tsai, in February 2025.

At the same time, current market data shows that Apple is regaining ground. According to IDC estimates, in the second quarter of 2026, its shipments in China rose by 24.4% year-on-year, whilst its market share reached 18.1%; the company ranked second behind Huawei. Apple’s revenue in the Greater China region for the third financial quarter stood at $18.816 billion, compared with $15.369 billion a year earlier.

The forthcoming launch may enhance the functional offering of compatible devices, but its practical impact will depend on the initial range of available features, device models and activation conditions. The company has not publicly disclosed the release date of the update or the architecture for how the models will interact.

A Chinese regulator has registered Apple’s AI service.
