The rescue service reported casualties in the area around the port city of Maumere. A further six people were injured, and two remained trapped under the rubble.

Governor of East Nusa Tenggara Province Emanuel Melchiades Laka Lena stated that at least five people had died when debris collapsed on them whilst they were asleep. Communications in the region have been disrupted, and attempts to reach the area by car have been halted by landslides. Another team has set off for the area by ferry.

The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) has reported the evacuation of around 2,000 residents of Nagekeo. Houses, warehouses and public facilities have been damaged there; power cuts and traffic congestion have been reported in parts of the region.

The tremors were felt from Nusa Tenggara to South Sulawesi

Strong tremors were felt in East and West Nusa Tenggara, as well as in parts of South Sulawesi. In Ende regency, hospital patients were being evacuated; there were also reports of at least one landslide.

The tsunami warning has been lifted, but search and rescue operations are continuing

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the first tremor at 04:58 local time at a depth of 15 kilometres. This was followed by several aftershocks. Tsunami waves less than one metre high were recorded in several areas, and the alert was lifted after approximately three hours.

The Australian Centre for the Prevention of tsunami stated that there is no threat to mainland Australia, its islands and territories. The BMKG also pointed out that in 1992, this region experienced a 7.5-magnitude earthquake which caused widespread destruction. The lifting of the warning changes the assessment of the risk of waves, but does not eliminate the consequences of landslides, rockfalls and the isolation of Nagekeo.

At least 20 people have died following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia.
