On Monday, 24 August, Ukraine\u2019s Independence Day, the UN Security Council will hold a special meeting on the situation in Ukraine and the continuation of Russian aggression. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 15:00 New York time, or 22:00 Kyiv time. The meeting is expected to be chaired by the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars L\u00fccke Rasmussen. Denmark holds the presidency of the UN Security Council in August.<\/p>\n

The UN Security Council is to discuss Ukraine on 24 August<\/h2>\n

In the United Nations\u2019 official agenda, the meeting is listed under the heading \u00abMaintaining peace and security in Ukraine\u00bb<\/strong>. It will take place in the UN Security Council Chamber in New York.<\/p>\n

Just before the start, at 14:45 local time, the Danish Foreign Minister is scheduled to address the press Lars Lukke Rasmussen<\/strong> along with representatives from other countries. The meeting itself will begin in 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

The date has symbolic significance \u2014 On 24 August, Ukraine will mark the 35th anniversary of the declaration of independence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The meeting was initiated by five European countries<\/h2>\n

According to Ukrainian media reports, the Security Council meeting was convened by Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia and the United Kingdom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The main topic is expected to be the continuation of Russia\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine and the security situation following the latest missile and drone attacks.<\/p>\n

The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the Russian Federation\u2019s latest large-scale strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. In particular, on 20 August, international partners publicly condemned the massive Russian attack and called for increased support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian issue is regularly brought before the UN Security Council<\/h2>\n

The Security Council has held numerous meetings on Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine, the massive attacks on civilian infrastructure, the treatment of prisoners of war and other consequences of the aggression.<\/p>\n

On 10 August, a separate meeting was also held in the Arria format, at the initiative of Latvia and the United Kingdom, on prisoners of war, civilian hostages and compliance with international humanitarian law in the context of the Russian Federation\u2019s war.<\/p>\n
