BMW has officially unveiled the facelifted 2027 model-year X3 at the Chengdu Motor Show. This is a long-wheelbase version of the crossover, developed specifically for the Chinese market. The model features a redesigned M-style radiator grille, a new Dune Grey colour, enhanced interior features and the BMW AI Personal Assistant, powered by a cloud-based language model. The first cars are due to be delivered to customers as early as September 2026.<\/p>\n
The updated BMW X3 was unveiled on 21 August at the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show. This is not an entirely new generation of the model, but an update to the current fourth-generation X3<\/strong>, with the main changes relating to design, comfort and digital features.<\/p>\n The most striking exterior change is the new signature twin-slat radiator grille with horizontal trim strips in the BMW M style<\/strong>. According to the designers\u2019 concept, this configuration makes the car appear wider and gives the front end a lower, sportier look.<\/p>\n The distinctive BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting has also been retained. For the Chinese version, it is already one of the X3\u2019s most recognisable features.<\/p>\n There are no major changes at the rear. The car has retained its distinctive arrow-shaped rear lights<\/strong>, whilst the double L-shaped light graphics form a pattern resembling the letter X. The design is complemented by vertical elements in the bumper and a spoiler above the rear window.<\/p>\n Another new feature is the colour scheme Dune Grey<\/strong>, which, for the Chinese X3, is associated with BMW\u2019s M Performance range of sports models. Together with the M alloy wheels, it is intended to make the car look more like the brand\u2019s sports versions.<\/p>\n In China, BMW is selling a specially designed X3 with a long wheelbase<\/strong>. It was this particular version that formed the basis for the updated 2027 model-year car.<\/p>\n The length of the Chinese X3 is 4,865 mm<\/strong>, width \u2014 1,920 mm, and the wheelbase measures 2,975 mm<\/strong>. Compared with the standard global version, the wheelbase has been increased by approximately 110 mm.<\/p>\n Interestingly, in terms of wheelbase, the Chinese X3 is actually on a par with the standard BMW X5 of previous generations.<\/p>\n The main purpose of this increase is not to provide more boot space, but to create more room for second-row passengers. BMW has stated that the legroom in the extended model has increased by approximately 96 mm<\/strong>, and the total legroom is over a metre.<\/p>\n China is one of the key markets for the X3. The previous generation of the model was BMW\u2019s best-selling car worldwide in 2023, with around 156,000 X3s sold in China alone that year.<\/p>\n There was no revolution in the design. BMW has retained the architecture of the current X3, with its large curved display and BMW Operating System 9<\/strong>, but changed a number of details.<\/p>\n New decorative stitching has been added to the dashboard in front of the front passenger. The company has also standardised the interior colours and simplified the colour combinations for the seats to give the interior a more cohesive look.<\/p>\n The changes to the equipment are far more interesting. For the X3, they have added front seat ventilation and rear seat heating<\/strong>, which is particularly important for the Chinese market, where owners of premium cars place great emphasis on the comfort of the second row.<\/p>\n However, the main technological innovation was BMW AI Personal Assistant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The system uses a large cloud-based language model and can respond to significantly more complex queries than conventional in-car voice assistants.<\/p>\n A driver, for example, might ask about:<\/p>\n BMW states that the assistant is capable of sustaining multi-step conversations, taking into account the context of previous queries, and handling more complex queries once the in-depth analysis mode has been activated.<\/p>\n The company plans to launch a major update to its AI features at the end of August. Other BMWs in China equipped with these features will gradually receive the new capabilities as well BMW Operating System 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This particular Chinese X3 was not fully electrified.<\/p>\n According to preliminary information regarding the 2027 model year, BMW is retaining its familiar range 2.0-litre petrol turbo engines<\/strong> in two power output variants. Chinese motoring publications quote power outputs of 140 and 190 kW \u2014 approximately 190 and 258 k.s.<\/strong><\/p>\n The earlier version features:<\/p>\n 190 PS.<\/strong> The eldest:<\/p>\n 258 PS.<\/strong> Both versions are compatible with 8-speed automatic gearbox<\/strong>. The Chinese long-wheelbase model also features the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.<\/p>\n The official performance figures for this powertrain in the X3 xDrive30L indicate acceleration from 0 to 100 km\/h in approximately 6.5 seconds<\/strong>, whilst the top speed is 239 km\/h. The 190 k.s. version accelerates to 100 km\/h in 8.7 seconds.<\/p>\n In addition to xDrive, the car features the ninth-generation BMW Dynamic Stability Control system, which coordinates traction distribution and braking to stabilise the car when cornering.<\/p>\n The current update to the X3 is notable in that BMW has made almost no changes to the car\u2019s mechanical components.<\/p>\n Instead, the manufacturer is focusing on three areas: visual updates, comfort and software<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In fact, the 2027 X3 has received a series of updates designed to keep the model competitive until BMW\u2019s next major technological transition. At the same time, the company is rolling out the Neue Klasse range and has already unveiled the new generation of the electric iX3 in China, so the classic petrol-powered X3 remains a more traditional alternative for buyers who are not yet ready to switch to an electric car.<\/p>\n For the Chinese market, the focus on AI is also to be expected: local manufacturers are actively integrating large language models, voice control and advanced digital services even into mid-range cars.<\/p>\n BMW is trying to respond to this competition without altering the basic concept of the X3 \u2014 a premium family crossover with a sporty character.<\/p>\n There are plans to deliver the updated X3 to Chinese customers from September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The final price range for the 2027 model year in particular has not yet been detailed in the available sources. As a guide, the current Chinese X3 range comprises four trim levels in the range of from 318,000 to 398,000 yuan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n It is important to note, however, that the car unveiled in Chengdu is aimed primarily at into the Chinese market<\/strong>.
