According to the new church calendar of the OCU and the UGCC, it is observed annually on 29 August. For the faithful, this is a day of prayer, repentance and a one-day fast. At the same time, there are many folk taboos associated with the date \u2014 ranging from a ban on using a knife to avoiding round-shaped foods \u2014 though by no means all of them have ecclesiastical origins. The UGCC explained this change separately during the calendar reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1424\">The date is a non-leap year date, meaning it remains the same every year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1556\">For communities that continue to follow the old Julian calendar, the church commemoration may continue to fall on 11 September.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1bfwlgw\" data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1583\">What does \u2018The Beheading\u2019 mean?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1635\">The Word <strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1608\">\u00abamputation\u00bb<\/strong> means beheading.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1806\">On this day, the Church commemorates the martyrdom of <strong>the death of John the Baptist<\/strong> \u2014 the prophet who prepared the people for the coming of Jesus Christ, preached repentance and baptised Christ in the River Jordan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1902\">John is also known as <strong data-start=\"1830\" data-end=\"1843\">The Forerunner<\/strong>, as his ministry preceded that of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"2237\">In the Christian tradition, this is not a celebration of death as such. The main significance of the day lies in commemorating a man who remained true to his convictions and to God\u2019s truth even in the face of death. In its sermons leading up to this day, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church emphasises precisely this fidelity to truth and conscience as the central theme of John\u2019s martyrdom.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"i4ys2o\" data-start=\"2239\" data-end=\"2270\">Why was John the Baptist killed?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2345\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%86%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD_%D0%A5%D1%80%D0%B5%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Story of the Death of John the Baptist<\/a> as described in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2347\" data-end=\"2473\">John openly criticised the ruler of Galilee <strong data-start=\"2390\" data-end=\"2406\">Herod Antipas<\/strong> because of his relationship with Herodias, who had previously been his brother\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2475\" data-end=\"2527\">As a result of these revelations, the prophet was arrested and imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2529\" data-end=\"2696\">During the banquet held in honour of Herod\u2019s birthday, Herodias\u2019s daughter danced before the guests. Her name is not mentioned in the Gospels, but later tradition identifies her as Salome.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2766\">Herod promised to grant her wish. On her mother\u2019s advice, she asked <strong data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2796\">the head of John the Baptist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2970\">Herod ordered the prophet to be put to death, after which his head was brought on a platter. It is also a time of self-restraint, prayer, repentance and self-discipline.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1g5gldy\" data-start=\"4314\" data-end=\"4350\">Things you must not do on the Feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4352\" data-end=\"4448\">The most important church observance on this day is \u2014 <strong data-start=\"4396\" data-end=\"4447\">to observe the fast and avoid excessive entertainment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4450\" data-end=\"4712\">Also, in the Orthodox tradition, on this day <strong data-start=\"4490\" data-end=\"4524\">do not perform the sacrament of marriage<\/strong>, as the Feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist is one of the one-day fasts. However, necessary day-to-day work is not in itself a sin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5350\" data-end=\"5514\">Therefore, if a person needs to go to work, look after children, help someone who is ill, prepare food or carry out other necessary tasks, there is no church prohibition against doing so.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5516\" data-end=\"5627\">It is another matter entirely to voluntarily turn the day into a noisy celebration or to completely ignore its spiritual significance.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"yszgn7\" data-start=\"5629\" data-end=\"5671\">Is it really not allowed to use a knife?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5673\" data-end=\"5835\">One of the best-known folk traditions is associated with the Beheading: it is said that <strong data-start=\"5744\" data-end=\"5803\">On 29 August, you must not pick up a knife or cut food<\/strong>, because the prophet had been beheaded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5837\" data-end=\"5875\">Sometimes you also hear that you mustn\u2019t:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5877\" data-end=\"5999\">\n<li data-section-id=\"pfcbs1\" data-start=\"5877\" data-end=\"5891\">to cut bread;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gugpce\" data-start=\"5892\" data-end=\"5909\">chop the cabbage;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"py0w7t\" data-start=\"5910\" data-end=\"5923\">to eat watermelon;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1llxc86\" data-start=\"5924\" data-end=\"5940\">to eat tomatoes;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1d8dx1j\" data-start=\"5941\" data-end=\"5965\">serve food on a plate;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cajuxe\" data-start=\"5966\" data-end=\"5999\">Eat round-shaped foods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6001\" data-end=\"6094\">These customs became established in folk culture because of their symbolic resemblance to the events surrounding the execution of John the Baptist.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6096\" data-end=\"6388\">However <strong data-start=\"6102\" data-end=\"6128\">These are not church rules<\/strong>. The official church regulations prescribe fasting and liturgical commemoration of the saint on this day, rather than a ban on knives, round vegetables or red foods. The OCU, in its liturgical calendar, designates 29 August specifically as a day of fasting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6390\" data-end=\"6484\">Therefore, a person may use a knife or cut food \u2014 this does not constitute a breach of church rules.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"115q8d4\" data-start=\"6486\" data-end=\"6543\">Is it okay to eat tomatoes, watermelon and other red foods?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6545\" data-end=\"6690\">Another common superstition states that on the Feast of the Beheading, one must not eat <strong data-start=\"6618\" data-end=\"6638\">red foods<\/strong>, as they are said to symbolise the blood of John the Baptist.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6692\" data-end=\"6785\">This list often includes tomatoes, watermelons, red apples, beetroot and red peppers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6787\" data-end=\"6836\">This is also <strong data-start=\"6796\" data-end=\"6815\">folk belief<\/strong>, rather than a requirement of the Church.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6838\" data-end=\"6939\">Fasting remains the main dietary restriction. The colour or shape of the food has no religious significance.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"64vsbr\" data-start=\"6941\" data-end=\"6979\">Is it okay to celebrate a birthday?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6981\" data-end=\"7069\">If your birthday falls on 29 August, there is, of course, no need to change the date itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7071\" data-end=\"7216\">However, believers are advised to bear in mind the nature of the church festival. It is best to postpone lavish feasts, alcohol, dancing and noisy parties until another date.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7218\" data-end=\"7303\">A family get-together or a quiet gathering that does not break the fast is not at odds with the spirit of the day.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"t3hv0h\" data-start=\"7305\" data-end=\"7342\">Is it possible to get married and have a church wedding?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7344\" data-end=\"7449\"><strong data-start=\"7344\" data-end=\"7388\">State registration of a marriage may be carried out<\/strong>, as church rules do not govern the work of these bodies <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/suspilstvo\/cancellation-of-the-wedding\/\">Civil Registry Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7451\" data-end=\"7663\">And here\u2019s <strong data-start=\"7457\" data-end=\"7508\">Church weddings are not performed on the Feast of the Beheading of St John the Baptist<\/strong> due to a one-day fast.
