In St Petersburg on the morning of 27 August A car belonging to a high-ranking Russian military officer exploded<\/strong>. According to available information, a Russian Air Force officer was killed, and his wife was admitted to intensive care in a serious condition. Russian media report that the officer held the rank of lieutenant-colonel.<\/p>\n

The car exploded after it had started moving<\/h2>\n

The explosion occurred at around 10.00 am in the Slavyanka neighbourhood of the Pushkin District of St Petersburg, near a shop on Kolpinskoye Highway.<\/p>\n

According to Russian media reports, The soldier was in a Geely crossover with his wife<\/strong>. After the engine had been started, the car travelled a few metres, after which there was a powerful explosion.<\/p>\n

The soldier was killed instantly. His wife suffered serious injuries and was taken to the intensive care unit. The explosion blew off the car\u2019s bonnet and rear bumper, shattered the windows, and sent debris flying dozens of metres away. Cars parked nearby were also damaged.<\/p>\n

There are preliminary reports of a homemade explosive device<\/h2>\n

According to preliminary information from \u00abFontanka\u00bb, the car\u2019s alarm may have gone off homemade explosive device<\/strong>. The Russian law enforcement authorities have not yet officially announced the definitive cause of the explosion.<\/p>\n

At the same time, another version has emerged in the Russian media \u2014 that a gas cylinder in the car had exploded. The circumstances of the incident and the method used to carry out the attack are therefore still being established.<\/p>\n

The name of the deceased and his exact rank had not been officially disclosed at the time of publication. Russian sources describe him as a military officer with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.<\/p>\n

The explosion occurred in an area where large numbers of military personnel had been stationed<\/h2>\n

The Slavyanka neighbourhood was actively developed with housing for Russian military personnel and their families.<\/p>\n

In 2010, he personally visited the district Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, who was then Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. He was inspecting flats built for military personnel. By 2012, almost a third of the housing being built in this area belonged to the Russian Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n

This makes the site of the explosion significant: Slovyanka has long been established as one of the areas with a high concentration of military personnel and infrastructure linked to the Russian Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n
