This occurred during one of the combined strikes on the capital in the summer of 2026, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. At the same time, the Main Intelligence Directorate clarifies that the actual range of the variant already deployed is up to 550 km, rather than 1,000 km. The name «Iskander-1,000» is linked to a broader Russian programme to increase the range of the 9M723 family.

Briefly about the main points

Russia has used the upgraded 9M723-2 ballistic missile against Kyiv for the first time.

The Main Intelligence Directorate estimates the range of the version already in use to be approximately 550 km.

The promising «Iskander-1000» project could have a range of up to 1,000 km.

The new rocket has been fitted with a more powerful engine whilst retaining its manoeuvrability.

To intercept such targets, Ukraine needs Patriot and SAMP/T systems.

Russia is simultaneously ramping up production of «Iskander» missiles and modernising its air defence penetration capabilities.

Russia has already used a new missile against Kyiv

According to Ukrainian intelligence, the new missile has the designation 9M723-2 and forms part of a complex which the GUR refers to as «Bora-M».

The main difference from the previous 9M723-1 is — enlarged rocket engine. Due to the larger dimensions of the power plant, the launch system was also modernised accordingly.

The Main Intelligence Directorate notes that the 9M723-2 is capable of engaging targets at a distance up to 550 km, whilst Ukrainian intelligence puts the range of the previous 9M723-1 model at around 390 km. The rest of the missile’s main components remain similar to those of the previous version.

Thus, Russia is no longer merely testing the extended range of the «Iskander»; it has used a modernised version in an actual strike against Ukraine.

Why is the missile called the «Iskander-1000»?»

The title may be misleading.

Even before the 9M723-2 had been confirmed to have been used in combat, reports of a Russian project had appeared in open sources «Iskander-1000», the aim of which is to increase the range of the ballistic missile to approximately 1,000 km.

In June 2026, Oleksandr Zaruba, a senior research fellow at the Ukrainian State Research Institute for Weapons Testing and Certification, reported that Russia was working on a modification, with a claimed maximum range of up to 1,000 km. They plan to achieve this through new fuel blends and a more powerful engine.

However, official figures GUR Since 27 August, reports regarding the missile that has already been used against Kyiv have specifically mentioned 550 km.

In other words, for the time being, we should distinguish between:

9M723-2, which has already been deployed — up to 550 km, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate;

Future development of the «Iskander-1000» — potentially up to 1,000 km;

There is currently no confirmed combat launch of the 9M723-2, as reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate, specifically at a range of 1,000 km.

Would such a missile be capable of reaching Lviv?

If Russia really does manage to bring the production version of the «Iskander» to 1,000 km of actual combat range, the geographical scope of the threat will expand dramatically.

Depending on where the launch sites are deployed, much deeper regions of Ukraine, including the western regions, could be at risk.

That is precisely why Ukrainian experts had previously warned that a version with a range of around 1,000 km would, in theory, allow Russia to attack almost the whole of Ukraine without the need to move the launchers close to the national border.

However, the claim that the missile already deployed in Kyiv is guaranteed to have a range of 1,000 km and is already capable of striking Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk or Chernivtsi, Official data from the Main Intelligence Directorate do not currently confirm this.

Technical specifications of the 9M723-2

The full set of specifications for the new variant is classified. The Main Directorate of Military Intelligence confirms, first and foremost, changes to the engine and range.

As intelligence reports suggest that the other components of the 9M723-2 have largely remained the same as those of the 9M723-1, the new missile is based on the well-known «Iskander-M» design.

Key characteristics of the 9M723 family:

Type: solid-fuelled quasi-ballistic missile
Class: «land — land»
Length: approximately 7.3 m for the standard 9M723
Diameter: about 0.92 m
A combat unit: approximately 480 kg in the standard version
Speed: to approximately 2.1 km/s for the standard «Iskander-M»
Introduction: inertial, satellite and optical correction, depending on the model
Range of the 9M723-2: up to 550 km according to the latest data from the Main Intelligence Directorate
The programme’s projected range: up to 1,000 km.

For a version capable of travelling 1,000 km in Russia, it will probably be necessary to adjust the ratio of fuel to the weight of the airframe and the warhead. Estimates suggesting a reduction in the warhead’s weight to 300–350 kg can be found in publicly available Russian sources, but such specifications have not been officially confirmed by Ukrainian intelligence.

Why is the «Iskander» so difficult to shoot down?

«The »Iskander-M’ does not fly along a simple, predictable trajectory ballistic trajectory.

The missile is capable of manoeuvring in flight and during its terminal phase, which makes it difficult to predict its point of interception.

Furthermore, the Russians are constantly modernising their air defence penetration capabilities.

According to the Ukrainian State Research Institute for Weapons Testing, the new «Iskander» missiles utilise a modernised module 9B899, which, in the final phase, can fire decoys, dipole reflectors and other radar-countermeasures.

Such decoys create additional signatures and force air defence systems to waste time identifying the real missile. Russia also regularly updates its missile software and uses faster processors for terrain recognition and guidance.

One of Ukraine’s main means of combating such ballistic targets remains the systems Patriot with the corresponding interceptor missiles. The European SAMP/T systems were also designed with the capability to counter certain ballistic threats.

Russia has significantly ramped up production of «Iskander» missiles»

This new variant comes at a time when Russian production of ballistic missiles has risen sharply.

According to estimates by Ukrainian military researchers, in the spring of 2026, Russia was producing approximately 60–70 «Iskander-M» ballistic missiles each month, as well as around 10 Iskander-K cruise missiles.

Previously, an analysis of Russian procurement had also revealed an order for a small batch 18 missiles with the designation 9M723-2, the production of which had been planned for as early as 2025. It is precisely this index that the Main Intelligence Directorate has now directly linked to the upgraded missile used against Kyiv.

This may mean that, following a trial run or a small initial batch, Russia is moving on to the operational deployment of the new version.

There is still a lot of Western electronics in the «Iskanders»

At the same time, the Main Intelligence Directorate released a large volume of information on the production of Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukrainian intelligence has identified 140 Russian and foreign components, as well as 35 companies involved in the «Iskander» production chain, and over a hundred officials and employees associated with them.

Only about a quarter of the components disclosed are manufactured by Russian companies.

The Main Intelligence Directorate has revealed that:

63 components manufactured by US companies;

8 each from Switzerland and Belarus;

4 each from Germany and Taiwan;

3 — from China.

In the mission-critical flight data processing unit, only 5 out of 43 components are Russian.

Foreign component manufacturers include Xilinx/AMD, Microchip Technology, Micron Technology, Analog Devices, Winbond Electronics and other companies. These are primarily microprocessors, memory, programmable logic devices and analogue-to-digital converters.

«The »Iskander-1000’ is changing the nature of the ballistic threat

The introduction of the 9M723-2 shows that Russia is steadily increasing the range and enhancing the capabilities of the «Iskander» family.

Currently The combat variant, as confirmed by the Main Intelligence Directorate, has a range of up to 550 km, however, the Russian programme aims to increase this figure further — potentially to 1,000 km.

If such a range is achieved without a significant reduction in accuracy or the ability to penetrate air defence systems, Russia will have a ground-based, mobile ballistic missile system capable of striking a much larger part of Ukraine from deep within its own territory.

Therefore, the main change is not the provisional name «Iskander-1000» itself, but Russia’s transition to the operational use of the new-generation 9M723-2, which already features a more powerful engine, a greater range and retains the key capabilities of the «Iskander-M», which is difficult to intercept.

Росія вперше бойово
