These developments are taking place alongside naval exercises and reconnaissance flights in the North Atlantic.

Briefly about the main points

The US Navy’s Mk 70 was delivered to Trondheim on 27 August.

HIMARS systems, marines and a Brimstone launcher have been deployed to Yan-Maien.

Operation Atlantic City is running until 4 September as part of Arctic Sentry.

Off the coast of Iceland, Northern Viking 2026 brings together forces from several NATO countries.

The Mk 70’s compatibility with the Tomahawk and SM-6 does not determine its actual ammunition load or combat missions.

The Mk 70 in Trondheim and Allied forces on Jan Mayen

On 27 August, an American C-17 Globemaster III delivered a US Navy Mk 70 containerised launcher to Trondheim. It is based on the four-cell Mk 41 vertical launch architecture and is compatible with various types of missiles, including Tomahawk and the Standard Missile family, to which the SM-6 belongs.

The deployment in Trondheim is thought to be linked to the ability to keep the Kola Peninsula, the Severo-Morksk docks, the Olenya airfield and the Severodvinsk shipyards under fire control. However, the system’s compatibility with certain missiles does not indicate what munitions are on site or for what purposes they might be used.

On Jan Mayen, situated approximately a thousand kilometres from mainland Norway, a platoon was deployed by MC-130 and C-130 aircraft HIMARS The New Hampshire National Guard. A British A400M also transported American and British marines, as well as Strikemaster-Bushmaster vehicles equipped with Brimstone launchers, to provide cover for the island.

These activities are taking place as part of Operation Atlantic City, scheduled for 26 August to 4 September, involving Norwegian, American and British forces. The Norwegian Armed Forces classify the operation as part of Arctic Sentry — NATO’s enhanced activities in the High North, which are led by the Joint Force Command in Norfolk.

Exercises off the coast of Iceland and the significance of the northern direction

The Northern Viking 2026 exercises are taking place around Iceland from 22 August to 3 September, with the participation of the US, Iceland and other NATO allies. The official programme covers anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, expeditionary engineering, search and rescue, and medical response.

At the same time, two RC-135 Rivet Joint strategic reconnaissance aircraft are operating over the Norwegian Sea, providing support, in particular, for the integrated command and control network and weapons systems of the three countries. A P-8 Poseidon ZP806 from Lossimut is flying at an altitude of 1,800 metres west of Scotland. This combination of activities enables the allies to practise communications, logistics, situational awareness and interoperability.

Jan Mayen lies to the north of the system of straits between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom — the GIUK Gap. This is the route by which units of the Russian Northern Fleet can sail from the north of the country out into the Atlantic. The island is home to meteorological observation facilities, a Galileo ground station, seismic sensors, emergency communications for shipping, and a fuel reserve for rescue operations.

Norway’s basic policy, introduced in 1949, stipulates that the country does not host foreign bases unless it has itself been attacked or is under threat of attack. At the same time, it does not preclude allied exercises, the reception of reinforcements or the pre-positioning of equipment. These deployments and exercises demonstrate the formation and maintenance of a dispersed allied presence in the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea, but do not constitute evidence of preparations for specific strikes against Russian territory.

Operation Atlantic City off Jan Mayen and Northern Viking 2026 off Iceland are testing the logistics and coordination of NATO forces in the Arctic.

Operation Atlantic City на Ян-Маєні та Northern Viking 2026 біля Ісландії відпрацьовують логістику й взаємодію сил НАТО в Арктиці.
[805619
805624
post-28527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world","tag-805624
["GET
