The plan is to gradually transform the facility into <strong data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"611\">a centre for the production and development of security and defence solutions<\/strong>, according to Volkswagen and the Financial Times. Volkswagen has agreed the key terms of a potential deal with the investment firm Aurelius Capital and the state of Lower Saxony. Aurelius is set to become the majority shareholder in the company, whilst Lower Saxony will be a co-owner. The plant employs around <strong data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1655\">1,800 employees<\/strong>, whilst car production there was due to be halted next year due to cost-cutting measures and excess production capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"2032\">The new agreement could save around <strong data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1873\">1,400 jobs<\/strong>. Once it comes under the control of its new owners, the plant will gradually begin to specialise in defence and security technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2034\" data-end=\"2185\">Sam <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/volkswagen-skorochennya-zavodiv\/\">Volkswagen<\/a> officially states that the aim of the agreement is to ensure the long-term preservation of the site and the majority of jobs.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1nafyv0\" data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2242\">Rafael may manufacture air defence components in Osnabr\u00fcck<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2244\" data-end=\"2451\">The first major defence project is set to be a collaboration with <strong data-start=\"2300\" data-end=\"2335\">Rafael Advanced Defence Systems<\/strong>. The Israeli company is known as one of the developers of the missile defence system <strong data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2450\">Iron Dome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2690\">Volkswagen has confirmed that Rafael, together with Aurelius and Lower Saxony, is preparing its first strategic project specifically in the field of <strong data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2597\">air defence<\/strong>. Further industrial partnerships are expected to follow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2692\" data-end=\"2943\">The Financial Times reports that the company plans to produce <strong data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2794\">components for Rafael air defence systems<\/strong>, and in the long term, the site could become part of the Israeli defence company\u2019s European production network.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2945\" data-end=\"3122\">Reuters also reports that the factory may produce components for air defence systems to meet the needs of <strong data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3083\">Germany and other European countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"12yaeh1\" data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3169\">From cars to the defence industry<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3528\">Volkswagen\u2019s decision is part of a wider trend in Germany and Europe. The automotive industry is facing weaker demand, high costs and increasingly fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers. At the same time, European countries are sharply increasing their defence budgets and seeking additional industrial capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3768\">Volkswagen itself is undergoing the largest restructuring in its history. The company is cutting costs, reducing its workforce and scaling back production capacity in Germany, whilst considering alternative uses for some of its plants.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3770\" data-end=\"3929\">Osnabr\u00fcck\u2019s experience could therefore serve as a model for other companies that will cease manufacturing cars but will be given a new lease of life thanks to defence contracts.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"ga2u81\" data-start=\"3931\" data-end=\"3977\">Production of the vehicles will be completed next year<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3979\" data-end=\"4160\">For the time being, the plant continues to manufacture cars. Its gradual conversion is due to begin once the current programmes have been completed in <strong data-start=\"4106\" data-end=\"4119\">2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4162\" data-end=\"4311\">The parties have not disclosed the financial terms of the sale. Nor has a full list of air defence systems and components to be manufactured in Osnabr\u00fcck been made public as yet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4313\" data-end=\"4576\">Volkswagen emphasises that the agreement currently sets out the key parameters of the future deal.
