Russia and North Korea On 7 September, the first fully-fledged road bridge between the two countries was opened<\/strong>. The dual-carriageway bridge across the Tuman River has become a new direct road link between the Russian Far East and the DPRK. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and DPRK Prime Minister Pak Thae Song took part in the ceremony to mark the opening of traffic across the bridge via video link. The first vehicles to cross the bridge were lorries decorated with the flags of both countries.<\/p>\n

Up to 300 cars a day<\/h2>\n

The bridge itself is about 1 km<\/strong>, whilst the total length of the crossing, including access roads, is almost 5 km. It has two lanes.<\/p>\n

On the Russian side, the Hasan road border crossing, with ten lanes, has also been built. Once it is operating at full capacity, the complex will be able to handle up to 300 vehicles and over 2,300 people every day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mishustin<\/strong> stated that the new route would be integrated into Russia\u2019s federal road network and would gain access to the transport corridor stretching from Vladivostok to St Petersburg. Lorries began using the bridge immediately after it opened, whilst passenger traffic is due to be permitted once the infrastructure is fully operational at the end of the year.<\/p>\n

Previously, there was no proper road link between the Russian Federation and North Korea<\/h2>\n

Prior to this, Russia and North Korea had direct air and rail links, but There was, in fact, no separate road crossing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For decades, vehicles were able to pass through the railway \u00ab\u2026\u2019 under a special procedure\u00abThe Friendship Bridge<\/a>\u00bb, which was built back in 1959. A temporary surface was used to allow vehicles to pass over it.<\/p>\n

Moscow and Pyongyang signed an agreement on the construction of a new road bridge in June 2024, during Vladimir Putin\u2019s visit to the DPRK<\/strong>. Construction work began in April 2025.<\/p>\n

The bridge was named after a Soviet military officer<\/h2>\n

The new footbridge has been named Yakov Novichenko<\/strong> \u2014 a Soviet serviceman who is regarded as a hero in North Korea.<\/p>\n

According to the North Korean account, in 1946 Novichenko saved the life of the founder of the DPRK Kim Il-sung<\/strong> during the attack, shielding himself with his body from a thrown grenade.<\/p>\n

Mishustin described the opening of the bridge as a \u00abhistoric event\u00bb and stated that relations between Russia and North Korea are at \u00aban unprecedentedly high level\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The new route may be of military significance<\/h2>\n

Relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have deepened significantly since the start of Russia\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The DPRK supplied Russia with ammunition and deployed military personnel<\/a> to take part in hostilities on the side of the Russian Federation. At the ceremony, Mishustin made a special mention of the North Korean soldiers who fought alongside the Russian army.<\/p>\n

Lim Il-chul, a professor at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, told Reuters that the new road route could potentially make things easier for Russia the transport of military cargo, ammunition and personnel<\/strong> from North Korea. In his view, the simultaneous expansion of bilateral trade is rendering international sanctions against North Korea less effective.<\/p>\n

The North Korean side, on the other hand, officially presents the project as infrastructure for the development of trade, tourism, economic cooperation and people-to-people contacts between the two countries.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
