The company has described this as the largest investment in Europe and has signed a 22-year agreement with Fortum to purchase nuclear electricity. The infrastructure is intended to support the operation of Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/google-gemini-omni-search-youtube-ai\/\">Google.<\/a> It chose the country, in particular, because of its cool climate, stable power grids and significant volumes of low-carbon electricity. In winter, temperatures in the north can drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius, which makes it possible to cool servers more efficiently using outside air and reduce data centres\u2019 energy costs.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also contracted a 94 MW energy storage system near the new data centre in Kajaani. Fortum will optimise its operation, and commissioning is expected in late 2027. Google states that the battery will help balance the grid during cold, windless periods and reduce price volatility.<\/p>\n<h2>The nuclear contract has been linked to the continuation of operations at Loviisa<\/h2>\n<p>Under the agreement, Google will purchase up to half of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power station, one of Finland\u2019s two nuclear power stations, for a period of 22 years. The President and Chief Investment Officer of Google <strong>Ruth Porat<\/strong> described it as the company\u2019s first nuclear energy agreement outside the US.<\/p>\n<p>Fortum has stated that the long-term contract provides economic certainty for the extension of the plant\u2019s operational life and the modernisation of Loviisa until 2050. The plant is located nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/data-tsentry-brytaniyi-cherhy-elektryka\/\">data centre<\/a> Google in Hamina. A licence issued by the Finnish government in 2023 authorises the operation of its two power units until the end of 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The companies have also agreed to explore opportunities for developing new nuclear and renewable power generation in Finland. This is an area of cooperation, not a decision to build a new reactor. Following the announcement, Fortum\u2019s share price rose by 15.5% to reach a four-and-a-half-year high.<\/p>\n<h2>The government gives assurances that there is a sufficient supply of electricity<\/h2>\n<p>Prime Minister <strong>Petteri Orpo<\/strong> He stated that the project would stimulate innovation, research and development. Responding to concerns about the potential strain data centres might place on the electricity grid and on prices, he said that the available information was sufficient to conclude that there was an adequate supply of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>According to Orpo, the government intends to ensure sufficient electricity generation and keep prices in check.
