According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, Russia is developing it based on missiles for the S-300 and S-400 systems: the stated range is up to 400 kilometres, with a speed of between 4 and 6 Mach. A total of 117 foreign components were identified in the electronic units.

Briefly about the main points

Russia is modernising the RM-48U using decommissioned anti-aircraft missiles and target missiles.

The missile is fitted with a 48N6DM solid-fuelled engine for the S-400.

The warhead weighs 199 kilograms and contains cubic warheads.

The autonomous version with satellite navigation is used more frequently, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate.

Intelligence has identified 63 Russian companies linked to manufacturing.

The missile was assembled from components taken from several anti-aircraft systems

According to intelligence reports, Russia is refurbishing decommissioned anti-aircraft guided missiles and target missiles for the S-400 system, and is subsequently modernising them for use against ground targets. The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) stated that RM-48U a ballistic «Frankenstein» due to the combination of components of different origins.

The rocket’s solid-propellant engine is derived from the 48N6DM anti-aircraft guided missile used in the S-400. The tail section was taken from the export-version 48N6E2, whilst the instrument compartment incorporates components from the 9M96 and 48N6E2 missiles.

The RM-48U warhead and guidance systems

The RM-48U is a single-stage solid-fuelled missile that follows a ballistic trajectory. It is equipped with a 199-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead containing pre-formed cube-shaped warhead elements.

An autonomous inertial navigation system and satellite navigation based on «Kometa-R12» receivers are used for navigation and guidance. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, Russia has set up dedicated units to operate these missiles.

The Special Tactical Missile Group uses the radio-command-guided version, whilst the Special Operational Missile Group uses the satellite-guided variant. Intelligence sources explained that the radio-command-guided variant is limited by the capabilities of the radars С-400, which is why Russia increasingly relies on autonomous missiles equipped with satellite navigation.

Brands from the US make up the majority of the components

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) has identified 117 foreign components in the missile’s electronic units. Of these, 95 are from US brands. A further four components originate from Taiwan, three from Switzerland, and two each from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and South Korea.

Among the components identified, the intelligence service named a laser diode manufactured by the French company 3SP Technologies. Details of the electronic components were published alongside information on the missile’s design on the War&Sanctions portal.

The Main Intelligence Directorate has published data on its production network

The intelligence service has also published information on 63 Russian companies involved in the production of the RM-48U. The documents contain details of their officials and employees, as well as the foreign equipment used by these companies.

The Main Intelligence Directorate stated that Russia continues to expand its arsenal of weapons. The intelligence service suggested that the experience of using such weapons against Ukraine could be utilised in future by Russia’s allies, in particular Iran and North Korea.

The RM-48U is a Russian ballistic missile based on the S-300 and S-400 systems, with a range of up to 400 km, a speed of 4–6 Mach and a warhead weighing 199 kg.

РМ-48У — російська балістична ракета на базі С-300 і С-400 з дальністю до 400 км, швидкістю 4–6 махів і бойовою частиною 199 кг.
[805620
806764
post-29083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science-tech","tag-806764
["GET
