He made these remarks in an in-depth interview with the Canadian broadcaster CBC News during his visit to Canada. Zelenskyy also rejected the idea of ending the war on a \u00abwin-win\u00bb basis, emphasising that, given the enormous human toll, the primary outcome must be the cessation of hostilities and the preservation of lives.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Key points at a glance:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zelenskyy believes that Russia wants more than just part of Ukraine.<\/li>\n<li>The President stated that a \u00abwin-win\u00bb scenario is no longer possible in the war.<\/li>\n<li>He described the cessation of hostilities as the main outcome.<\/li>\n<li>Ukraine continues to call on the US to tighten sanctions against Russia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-section-id=\"1j1qfqu\" data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1337\">Zelenskyy explained what, in his view, Putin is aiming for<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1339\" data-end=\"1485\">In an interview, Zelenskyy cast doubt on the assumption held by some of his partners that the Kremlin is allegedly seeking to acquire only a certain part of Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1666\">The President pointed out that Russia is already the world\u2019s largest country by area, so he believes it is wrong to attribute the war to a desire to gain a few more \u00abkilometres\u00bb of territory.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1737\">\n<p data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1737\">\u00abPutin doesn\u2019t want kilometres; he wants the whole of Ukraine,\u00bb said Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1972\">According to him, he believes that Moscow is seeking to bring Ukraine under Russian control, rather than merely to shift the front line. This is the Ukrainian president\u2019s assessment of the Kremlin\u2019s strategic objectives.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"eqwubp\" data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2008\">\u00abThere is no longer a \u00bbwin-win\u2019 in this war<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2167\">Zelenskyy was asked separately about the US approach to the negotiations, in which representatives from Washington spoke of seeking a solution acceptable to both sides.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2357\">The President replied that, after years of war and significant loss of life, he no longer sees any possibility of a traditional scenario in which both Ukraine and Russia could claim victory.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2417\">\n<p data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2417\">\u00abThere can be no win-win in this war,\u00bb said Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2419\" data-end=\"2673\">He added that the main \u00abvictory\u00bb right now should be <strong data-start=\"2469\" data-end=\"2516\">ending the war and saving lives<\/strong>. Speaking on CBC, Zelenskyy emphasised that this is not just a matter of Ukraine\u2019s or Russia\u2019s interests, but of the need to bring the hostilities to an end.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1a4i5cb\" data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2718\">Zelenskyy calls on the US to tighten sanctions<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2830\">At the same time, the Ukrainian president continues to call on Washington to impose tougher economic sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2832\" data-end=\"3086\">On 11 September, during a speech at the Yalta European Strategy meeting, Zelenskyy stated that decisions on sanctions needed to be taken more quickly, particularly to limit Russia\u2019s ability to produce missiles and other weapons.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3298\">The Office of the President also emphasises that sanctions should exert economic pressure within the Russian Federation and encourage Russian businesses to demand that the country\u2019s leadership bring the war to an end.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3300\" data-end=\"3557\">Ukraine specifically calls on the US, the European Union and other states to coordinate their efforts <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/sanktsii-ssha-vtb-iran\/\">sanctions<\/a> against Russian companies, individuals and vessels belonging to the shadow fleet. On 13 September, Zelenskyy brought three new sets of Ukrainian sanctions into force at once.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1l4cgyz\" data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3616\">Zelenskyy is preparing for a meeting with Trump in New York<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3618\" data-end=\"3738\">The Ukrainian side is also preparing for another meeting between Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump at the end of September.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3740\" data-end=\"4062\">Zelenskyy had previously cited these as indicative dates <strong data-start=\"3786\" data-end=\"3803\">21\u201323 September<\/strong>, provided the two presidents\u2019 schedules coincide. Topics for the forthcoming talks include an end to attacks on the energy sector, the safety of maritime shipping, further military aid and the possible resumption of the diplomatic process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4064\" data-end=\"4210\">The meeting is planned against the backdrop of preparations for the high-level session of the UN General Assembly in New York and US attempts to resume negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4212\" data-end=\"4442\">At the same time, key differences between the parties remain: Moscow continues to make territorial demands, which Kyiv rejects, whilst Ukraine insists on security guarantees and real pressure being brought to bear on
