In 2026, an increasing number of tourists are postponing their trips until <strong data-start=\"406\" data-end=\"438\">September, October and November<\/strong>, and the tourism industry has already given this trend its own name \u2014 <strong data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"514\">fallcation<\/strong>, that is, the autumn holiday. According to Virtuoso, bookings for autumn trips to Europe have more than doubled over the last two years. Demand has risen particularly sharply for the French Riviera, the Greek islands and Apulia in Italy. The first is \u2014 <strong data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1527\">heatwave<\/strong>. Recent years have shown that July and August in <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/lifestyle\/de-zymuvaty-v-yevropi\/\">Southern Europe<\/a> are increasingly synonymous with record-breaking temperatures, overcrowded beaches and the need to plan excursions early in the morning or in the evening.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1901\">In autumn, conditions become more pleasant: the sea is still warm, particularly in September, and temperatures in Spain, Greece, Italy or the south of France often remain suitable for a beach holiday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2129\">The second reason is \u2014 <strong data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"1934\">fewer people<\/strong>. It is precisely the desire to avoid crowded cities and holiday resorts that is cited as one of the main factors driving growth in the shoulder season \u2014 the period between the high and low seasons.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2246\">The third \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2139\" data-end=\"2148\">money<\/strong>. Autumn holidays are often cheaper, although the difference isn\u2019t as great as it was a few years ago.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1k3mhfv\" data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2291\">September is turning into another August<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2293\" data-end=\"2348\">ABTA has even highlighted a specific trend <strong data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2347\">Super September<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2608\">In 2023, 17% of the British people surveyed were planning to travel abroad in September. In 2024, the figure rose to 23%, and in 2025, to 24%. September proved particularly popular amongst people without school-age children and older travellers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2610\" data-end=\"2840\">Data from eSky shows a similar trend: bookings for September 2026 have risen by approximately <strong data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2726\">57% year-on-year<\/strong>. The most popular destinations among tourists were Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2842\" data-end=\"3074\">This is already changing the way the tourism market operates. Hotels are no longer closing for the season, airlines are extending their seasonal routes, and cruise operators are keeping their ships in the Mediterranean in the autumn and even in winter.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"q8owjb\" data-start=\"3076\" data-end=\"3117\">Autumn could still be considerably cheaper<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3119\" data-end=\"3208\">The strongest argument in favour of a fallcation is the chance to visit the same destination for less money.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3440\">For example, according to eSky, flights from Brussels to M\u00e1laga in September cost approximately <strong data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3313\">47% cheaper<\/strong>, compared with July. Flights to Madrid fell in price by almost 48%, and those to Asturias by more than 60%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3442\" data-end=\"3499\">However, it is no longer wise to automatically assume that the whole of autumn is cheap.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3501\" data-end=\"3740\">Expedia reports that, due to the sharp rise in the popularity of the shoulder season, prices in certain cities are also starting to rise in the autumn. In other words, the secret of \u00abtravelling in September to save money\u00bb is gradually becoming common knowledge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3848\">That is precisely why travel experts advise looking not only at popular capital cities, but also at less obvious destinations.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"3of82y\" data-start=\"3850\" data-end=\"3889\">Which sectors are currently growing the fastest?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3891\" data-end=\"4020\">One of the most interesting trends of autumn 2026 is that tourists are increasingly looking for <strong data-start=\"3969\" data-end=\"4019\">not the typical overcrowded cities, but alternatives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4022\" data-end=\"4260\">According to Expedia, interest in Luxembourg among British users has risen by <strong data-start=\"4103\" data-end=\"4111\">470%<\/strong> compared with last year. Searches for Strasbourg increased by 1,70%, for Annecy by 1,65%, and for Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo by 1,15%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4262\" data-end=\"4288\">The Balkans are also seeing significant growth:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4290\" data-end=\"4414\">\n<li data-section-id=\"dxazr9\" data-start=\"4290\" data-end=\"4318\">Saranda in Albania \u2014 +110%;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"10l4jxg\" data-start=\"4319\" data-end=\"4347\">Budva in Montenegro \u2014 +85%;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1h8ea88\" data-start=\"4348\" data-end=\"4414\">Ljubljana in Slovenia \u2014 +80%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4416\" data-end=\"4548\">This is part of a wider trend: tourists are looking for cities and regions where they can experience a European atmosphere without the peak summer crowds.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"6xq9mu\" data-start=\"4550\" data-end=\"4601\">Italy, Greece and France remain the favourites<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4603\" data-end=\"4672\">Despite the interest in new trends, the classic styles are here to stay.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4674\" data-end=\"4930\">Virtuoso lists the following among its top autumn favourites <strong data-start=\"4724\" data-end=\"4773\">The French Riviera, the Greek islands and Apulia<\/strong>. Over the past two years, autumn bookings for the Riviera have risen by 1,79%, for the Greek islands by more than 1,30%, and for Apulia by 78%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"5116\">Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveller also lists Vienna, San Sebasti\u00e1n, Paris, the Dolomites, Umbria, Copenhagen and Ireland among the most interesting destinations for autumn.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5118\" data-end=\"5250\">Autumn brings something that is missing in the height of summer: wine season, the harvest, food festivals, autumnal landscapes and a more local atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"15nlnta\" data-start=\"5252\" data-end=\"5295\">Who is the biggest fan of the \u2018fallcation\u2019 trend?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5400\">At first, autumn tourism was mainly associated with pensioners or couples without children. That is no longer the case.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5402\" data-end=\"5590\">ABTA has recorded a rise in interest in September across virtually all age groups. This is particularly noticeable amongst people aged 35\u201344 and tourists aged 65 and over.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5592\" data-end=\"5639\">Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler notes that the following destinations are particularly popular:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5641\" data-end=\"5819\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1307q2p\" data-start=\"5641\" data-end=\"5655\">young couples;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"hijqad\" data-start=\"5656\" data-end=\"5673\">people without children;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"e4z2b6\" data-start=\"5674\" data-end=\"5713\">parents with flexible working hours;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kzt2dx\" data-start=\"5714\" data-end=\"5754\">travellers who work remotely;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"wiress\" data-start=\"5755\" data-end=\"5819\">older tourists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5821\" data-end=\"5952\">Remote working has also made seasonality less rigid: people no longer have to tie their two-week holiday specifically to July.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"16m1tlk\" data-start=\"5954\" data-end=\"5996\">Fallcation is reshaping the very landscape of tourism<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5998\" data-end=\"6126\">The paradox of this trend is that the more people discover autumn for themselves, the less it resembles a proper low season.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6128\" data-end=\"6344\">In many popular European destinations, September has effectively become an extension of summer. In some places, the peak season extends into October, and in others, even into November.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6346\" data-end=\"6530\">This is beneficial for the tourism industry: hotels, restaurants and airlines enjoy a longer season. For travellers, however, this is not always the case, as popularity gradually leads to higher prices and larger crowds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6532\" data-end=\"6663\">That\u2019s why the new travel hack is no longer just about the phrase <strong data-start=\"6584\" data-end=\"6600\">\u00abGo in the autumn\u00bb<\/strong>, but in choosing the right month and destination.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1hzc9k\" data-start=\"6665\" data-end=\"6706\">Should I postpone my holiday until the autumn?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6708\" data-end=\"6793\">For those who aren\u2019t tied to school holidays, a \u2018fallcation\u2019 really does have many advantages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6795\" data-end=\"7042\">September is ideal for those who are still longing for the sea and warmer weather. October is ideal for city breaks, gastronomy, and trips to Italy, France, Spain and the Balkans. November may be a better option for cultural tourism and visits to major cities, although beach holidays are already considerably limited.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7044\" data-end=\"7145\">Consequently, the traditional view that <strong data-start=\"7088\" data-end=\"7122\">holiday = July or August<\/strong>, is gradually falling into ruin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7147\" data-end=\"7401\">\u00abFallcation\u00bb is already evolving from a niche tip into a distinct part of the global tourism calendar.
