In <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/sk-hynix-nasdaq-ai\/\">SK Hynix<\/a> They confirmed that the company is exploring various options for expanding its manufacturing base and strengthening its memory business, but emphasised that no decision has yet been taken. Intel declined to comment on specific negotiations.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2028\" data-end=\"2123\">At present, it is also unclear exactly which types of memory could be manufactured in Ohio should a deal be struck.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1focamk\" data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2176\">At stake: DRAM and memory for artificial intelligence<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2495\">SK Hynix is one of the world\u2019s largest memory manufacturers. The company produces <strong data-start=\"2256\" data-end=\"2264\">DRAM<\/strong>, which is used in servers, computers and smartphones; NAND memory for long-term data storage; and HBM \u2014 high-bandwidth memory, which has become a critical component of modern artificial intelligence accelerators.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2869\">It is the rapid growth of AI infrastructure that is driving up demand for memory. There is already a shortage of certain types of components on the market, and manufacturers of servers, smartphones and computers are trying to secure production capacity in advance. Problems with memory availability are likely to persist for at least the next few years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"3045\">For American technology companies, local manufacturing could reduce their reliance on Asian factories and minimise the risk of disruptions to global supply chains.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"14ive81\" data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3075\">Seoul may set conditions<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3077\" data-end=\"3161\">The South Korean government could prove to be one of the main obstacles to a potential project.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3163\" data-end=\"3574\">Cutting-edge production technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/pivdenna-koreya-investytsiyi-ai-chipiv\/\">DRAM<\/a> and HBM are of strategic importance to the country. South Korea\u2019s Ministry of Trade told Reuters that the decision on investment rests with the company, but the transfer of technologies that have the status of <strong data-start=\"3398\" data-end=\"3436\">\u00abnational key technologies\u00bb<\/strong>, must undergo a special inspection in accordance with the legislation on the protection of industrial technologies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3576\" data-end=\"3685\">This means that even if SK Hynix and Intel reach an agreement, the project may still require approval from the authorities in Seoul.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3687\" data-end=\"3956\">The situation is further complicated by broader trade negotiations between the US and South Korea. The two countries are simultaneously discussing the implementation of a major investment package worth <strong data-start=\"3845\" data-end=\"3858\">$350 billion<\/strong>, part of which has not yet been allocated to specific projects.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"16g5jdd\" data-start=\"3958\" data-end=\"4008\">The project could help Intel with its factories in Ohio<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4010\" data-end=\"4131\">A partnership with SK Hynix could also provide Intel with additional capacity for its large-scale manufacturing complex <strong data-start=\"4118\" data-end=\"4130\">Ohio One<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4418\">Back in 2022, Intel announced an investment of over <strong data-start=\"4185\" data-end=\"4233\">$28 billion into the construction of two state-of-the-art factories<\/strong> near the town of New Albany. The site offers sufficient space to potentially accommodate up to eight businesses and associated infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4420\" data-end=\"4465\">However, the original timetable had to be revised.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4467\" data-end=\"4835\">According to Intel\u2019s current plan, the first factory is due to be completed in <strong data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4540\">2030<\/strong>, with production expected to commence in 2030\u20132031. The second facility is scheduled for completion in 2031, with operations set to begin in 2032. The company explained that the postponement was necessary to control capital expenditure and align the pace of construction with future demand.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"4950\">SK Hynix\u2019s arrival could potentially make the site more attractive to other companies in the semiconductor industry as well.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1ifzgfe\" data-start=\"4952\" data-end=\"4986\">SK Hynix is already expanding in the US<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4988\" data-end=\"5097\">For the South Korean company, memory production in Ohio would mark the next stage of its expansion in the US.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5099\" data-end=\"5320\">SK Hynix is already developing a facility in Indiana, USA, to package cutting-edge AI chips, but the company has not yet had full-scale production of the memory chips themselves on US soil.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5322\" data-end=\"5560\">At the same time, building semiconductor factories in the US is more expensive than in South Korea. Among the reasons are higher labour and construction costs, as well as the fact that a significant proportion of equipment and materials suppliers are based in Asia.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5562\" data-end=\"5687\">Despite this, the rapid expansion of data centres and the demand for AI components are making US manufacturing increasingly attractive.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5689\" data-end=\"5921\">News of the talks has already had an impact on the stock market: shares <strong data-start=\"5749\" data-end=\"5797\">Intel rose by approximately 5.2% in pre-market trading<\/strong>, whilst SK Hynix shares closed higher in Seoul by approximately <strong data-start=\"5874\"
