In response, the US agreed to lift sanctions on two Belarusian companies \u2014 \u00abLakokraska\u00bb and \u00abBellesbumprom\u00bb. According to him, if the parties resolve other issues, further <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/politics\/ssha-lukashenko-zvilnennia-viazni\/\">the release of prisoners<\/a> and a further easing of US sanctions against Belarusian companies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1368\">The US should lift restrictions on a manufacturer of paint and varnish products <strong data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1235\">\u00abPaint and Varnish\u00bb<\/strong> and the State Concern for the Woodworking and Pulp and Paper Industries <strong data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1329\">\u00abBellesbumprom\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1370\" data-end=\"1624\">The negotiations were preceded by <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/politics\/koul-lukashenko-politvyazni-sanktsii\/\">meeting<\/a> Cole from <strong>Alexander Lukashenko<\/strong> in Minsk. Over the past year, Washington has been using negotiations on sanctions as one of the tools to secure the release of prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1sxi4di\" data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1658\">Journalists are among those who have been released<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1944\">According to Reuters and the Associated Press, a journalist is among the 25 who have been dismissed <strong data-start=\"1731\" data-end=\"1753\">Andriy Aleksandrov<\/strong>, his wife Irina Zlobina, Lyudmila Chekina, the former head of the independent media outlet TUT.BY, and other detainees. Some of those released have already arrived in Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1946\" data-end=\"2357\">Lukashenko himself denies that there are political prisoners in Belarus and claims that the prosecutions are linked to breaches of the law. Human rights organisations and international bodies disagree with this. Recently, UN experts stated that the Belarusian criminal justice system is systematically used to suppress critics of the authorities; Minsk does not acknowledge these allegations.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"bm9uk\" data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2396\">Hundreds of people remain behind bars<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2522\">Despite the latest releases, the number of people whom Belarusian human rights activists classify as political prisoners remains significant.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2802\">As at the time of the audit, the Human Rights Centre\u2019s database <strong data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2606\">\u00abViasna\u00bb held 912 people<\/strong> on the list of political prisoners and those convicted in politically motivated criminal cases. The list may be updated following today\u2019s release of 25 people. On 15 September, the human rights community in Belarus added to the list a further <strong data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2891\">11 new names<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"3174\">According to Cole, talks between Washington and Minsk will continue. The US representative expects that further agreements may involve both further releases and the lifting of additional
