The US President stated that, in such a case, he might impose \u00abvery serious tariffs\u00bb or restrict trade with Europe in certain sectors. He described the very idea as \u00abridiculous\u00bb and once again criticised Canada as a US trading partner.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1380\">\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1380\">\u00abIf I regard this as a hostile act, I will impose very heavy tariffs,\u00bb Trump said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1664\">The US President also raised the possibility of halting trade with Europe in certain sectors. At the same time, he clarified that much would depend on the motives of Brussels and Ottawa: if their actions were, in his words, \u00abwell-intentioned\u00bb, he would not see a problem with this.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"vemy86\" data-start=\"1666\" data-end=\"1719\">Von der Leyen has proposed a new status for Canada<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1858\">The reason for Trump\u2019s reaction was <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/fon-der-leyen-state-of-the-union-2026\/\">statement<\/a> President of the European Commission <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> during the annual State of the European Union address.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"2169\">She suggested <strong data-start=\"1879\" data-end=\"1944\">\u00abopen the door\u00bb to Canada as the EU\u2019s first associate member<\/strong> and to take relations between the parties to a new level. The initiative aims to deepen cooperation in the fields of defence, technology, energy, artificial intelligence and critical raw materials.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2464\">However, it does not currently have that status <strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2242\">does not exist in the treaties of the European Union<\/strong>. Brussels will effectively have to create a new framework and define exactly what rights and obligations it will entail. The idea will also need to be discussed with the EU Member States and Canada.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"7xunic\" data-start=\"2466\" data-end=\"2514\">The European Commission denies that it is anti-US<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2829\">Following Trump\u2019s remarks, the European Commission emphasised that the partnership with Canada could be strengthened <strong data-start=\"2603\" data-end=\"2651\">is not directed against any third country<\/strong>.
