Speaking in Prešov, he cast doubt on the possibility of deploying thousands of troops to assist an ally. At the same time, the head of government emphasised that Slovakia remains a member of the Alliance and is fulfilling its alliance obligations.

Briefly about the main points

Fico linked the risk of war for Slovakia to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.

The Prime Minister referred to the hypothetical training of thousands of military personnel for the operation.

He reaffirmed the country’s membership of the Alliance and its obligations as an ally.

Article 5 calls for assistance, but does not specify the size of the contingent.

What scenario did the Slovak Prime Minister outline?

Fico He addressed students and hospital staff in Prešov on 17 September. Speaking about the risk of a large-scale military conflict in Europe, he suggested imagining a scenario in which, following the invocation of Article 5, Bratislava would be asked to prepare several thousand troops for deployment.

«I do not want Slovakia to be drawn into a military conflict because of some Article 5,» said the Prime Minister. He added that, as head of government, he would do everything in his power to prevent the country from being drawn into an armed conflict.

Fico did not object to membership of the Alliance

According to the Slovak state news agency TASR, in the same speech, Fico said that the country values its membership of NATO, committed to cooperation within the Alliance and to fulfilling its obligations.

Consequently, his remarks did not constitute a declaration of Slovakia’s withdrawal from the collective defence mechanism or an official renunciation of its international obligations. At the same time, they leave open the question of what form of support for an ally Bratislava would consider acceptable in the event of a crisis.

Article 5 does not set quotas for military personnel

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty defines an armed attack against one ally as an attack against all. Member states are obliged to provide assistance, but each shall take such measures as it deems necessary. The use of armed force is explicitly provided for as a possible, but not mandatory, option.

Therefore, the example involving five or ten thousand troops was hypothetical, rather than a procedure for the automatic allocation of contingents within NATO. Article 5 has been invoked only once — following the attacks in the US on 11 September 2001; on that occasion, the allies agreed on specific support measures.

During his speech, Fico also described the situation in Europe as extremely dangerous, criticised the escalation of military rhetoric and expressed concern about a further escalation of the war in Ukraine. His statement may be a political signal against a large-scale deployment of Slovak forces, but it does not override the treaty obligation to assist allies.

Robert Fico spoke out against Slovakia being drawn into the war under Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, whilst not denying the country’s obligations to the Alliance.

Роберт Фіцо виступив проти втягнення Словаччини у війну за статтею 5 НАТО, водночас не заперечив зобов’язань перед Альянсом.
[805617
805624
post-30029","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-politics","tag-805624
["GET
