GPT-6 Astra, unveiled in early September, is rapidly gaining clients and has already prompted potential investors in Anthropic to take a closer look at the company’s position ahead of a possible IPO. The paradox is that all this is happening just as Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, is calling on the industry to slow down the development of the most powerful systems due to the risks posed by AI.

Key points at a glance:

Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model.

Following its launch, GPT-6 Astra quickly gained a share of corporate spending on AI.

Astra accounts for approximately 13% of such expenditure, compared with around 8% for Claude Fable.

A new release could take place in the run-up to the company’s potential IPO.

Astra turned the situation around in just a few weeks

Back in the summer, Anthropic’s position looked exceptionally strong. Claude had become one of the key tools for programming, corporate analytics and complex intellectual work. The company was rapidly increasing its revenue, and its models were being used more and more extensively by large business clients.

3 September OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra and the balance began to shift.

OpenAI positions Astra not simply as a new chatbot model, but as a system designed for complex professional tasks. It is geared towards programming, browser-based tasks, computer-related work, cyber security, science and multi-step autonomous processes.

This is precisely what is putting direct pressure on Anthropic. Over the years, Claude has grown stronger in precisely those areas where businesses see the greatest practical value: writing code, working with large amounts of data and performing complex tasks with minimal human intervention. Now OpenAI is targeting that very same segment.

The figures that might have prompted Anthropic to act quickly

Following its launch, GPT-6 Astra quickly gained popularity amongst corporate users.

The situation currently looks like this:

GPT-6 Astra — approximately 13% in corporate spending on AI;

Claude Fable — approximately 8%;

Some of Anthropic’s potential investors are already reassessing the company’s competitive position;

The cycle of technological leadership in the AI market is shrinking to a matter of months, and sometimes even weeks.

This does not necessarily mean that OpenAI has taken over the corporate market, but it is an unwelcome sign for Anthropic. In this business, it is not falling behind that is dangerous. What is dangerous is when clients start to regard a competitor as the new technological standard. And that is precisely why the new Claude may happen sooner than expected.

What is known about the new Anthropic model?

Reuters, citing three sources, reports that Anthropic is considering launching a new model, which is intended to help address OpenAI’s growth following the launch of Astra.

However, the company has not yet announced:

the name of the future model;

the exact date of the presentation;

price;

specifications;

the size of the context window;

test results;

a list of new agent capabilities.

In other words, this is not an announcement of a finished product, but rather a preview of Anthropic’s next move. The very fact that such a decision has been taken is significant for the market.

The company’s latest major release — Claude Opus 5 — took place only on 24 July. Anthropic stated that the model is geared towards programming and knowledge work and comes close to matching the capabilities of its most powerful systems, but is significantly cheaper to run.

Less than two months have passed, and the industry is already looking forward to the next generation.

GPT-6 Astra is no longer just a chatbot

The Astra’s success should be viewed in a broader context. The main shift in the AI market at the moment is the move away from models that correspond to, to models that act.

Just a few years ago, the typical scenario was quite simple:

query → response.

Now it’s looking more and more like this:

task → search → analysis → browser → programmes → code → testing → final result.

OpenAI is explicitly banking on this format. Astra demonstrates strong capabilities in computer use, web browsing, software engineering and cybersecurity. The company also describes it as the most powerful model it has widely deployed. And this is precisely the market where Anthropic has long held a very strong position. The race is no longer about, Who will write the best text?. The race is on to see which, who the company can entrust with the actual work.

Astra has reached a critical level of cyber capabilities

Alongside the leap in performance, OpenAI has also seen a surge in risks. GPT-6 Astra has become the first widely deployed OpenAI model to reach the level of Critical in the field of cyber capabilities in accordance with the company’s Preparedness Framework.

According to OpenAI’s assessment, provided it has the appropriate tools and access, the model can:

to identify previously unknown vulnerabilities;

to develop new ways of utilising them;

work with well-secured systems;

to carry out some of these operations without constant human supervision.

OpenAI has therefore announced measures to strengthen the internal isolation of models, encrypt checkpoint files, monitor system activity and implement additional alignment checks. And this brings us to the central contradiction of the whole story.

Anthropic is calling for a slowdown in AI development — whilst at the same time preparing a new release

Dario Amodei He has recently become one of the most prominent advocates of a more cautious approach to the development of the most powerful AI systems.

Anthropic, along with other US AI companies, warns that the capabilities of AI models are advancing faster than the mechanisms for control and regulation. European technology companies are already criticising such calls. Their argument is simple: if the US already has the most powerful models, calling on the rest of the world to «slow down» can only cement American dominance. Reuters reports that this debate is now intensifying in Europe.

And now Anthropic finds itself in a trap. The company may believe that AI is developing too quickly. But even if it does slow down, OpenAI, Google and Meta are under no obligation to do the same.

Why can’t Anthropic just wait?

Let’s imagine that Anthropic delays the next version of Claude by six months.

During this time, OpenAI:

attracts new corporate clients;

integrates Astra into a wider range of products;

collects usage data;

attracts more developers;

standardises its APIs;

is preparing the next model.

In that case, Anthropic’s safer but belated release might enter a market that has already changed. This is precisely the fundamental problem with the AI race.

Everyone may have an interest in slowing down. But nobody wants to be the first to do so.

That said, Anthropic is by no means weak

Competitive pressure does not mean that Anthropic is in crisis. On the contrary, as of July, its The annualised revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion. At OpenAI, this figure stood at around $40 billion.

Pros. data According to Reuters, Anthropic also predicts the possibility of getting close to approximately $200 billion in revenue by 2028. These are staggering figures. That is precisely why the competition is so fierce. It is no longer just about who will create the smartest chatbot. It is about a market in which the winner could gain: corporate budgets, cloud infrastructure, AI agents, programming, science, medicine, office automation and hundreds of billions of dollars in future revenue.

The IPO is adding even more pressure

Anthropic is also preparing for a potential stock market flotation. The company may carry out IPO following the US mid-term elections, although the final dates have not yet been set.

Before making such an investment, investors will look at more than just returns. They will be interested in three things:

Is Anthropic maintaining its technological leadership?.

Can the company retain its major corporate clients?.

Could a single major release from OpenAI or Google drastically alter the balance of power?.

That is precisely why launching a new model ahead of the IPO would make obvious strategic sense. If it delivers strong results, Anthropic will be able to present a simple case to investors: Claude isn’t far behind.

The next battle won’t be over a chat

It seems the industry is entering a new phase. The next generation of AI will no longer be judged so much on the elegance of its responses.

The key factors will be:

autonomy;

programming;

computer skills;

working with a browser;

carrying out long-term tasks;

integration with corporate systems;

the price of the work carried out;

the security of autonomous agents.

This is where Anthropic, OpenAI and Google will go head-to-head. And Anthropic’s new model could be the first major test following the launch of GPT-6 Astra.

The company still has revenue, customers, technology and one of the strongest teams in the AI market. But now it needs to prove once again that this is enough. In 2026, AI leadership cannot be achieved once and for all.
