President Donald Trump has signed a bill authorising the imposition of tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian energy resources. India, where Russian oil accounts for over 40% of imports, has already warned the US of the possible consequences for bilateral relations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<ul>\n<li>On 18 September, Donald Trump signed a new sanctions bill against Russia.<\/li>\n<li>The document provides for the possibility of duties of up to 100% for the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas.<\/li>\n<li>India and China are among the largest importers of Russian oil.<\/li>\n<li>Russian crude currently accounts for over 40% of India\u2019s oil imports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Trump has been granted new powers regarding customs duties<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">President of the United States <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> 18 September <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/tramp-pidpysav-zakon-sanktsii-proty-rosii\/\">signed the law<\/a> <strong>Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026<\/strong>. The White House has announced that the document extends sanctions, tariffs and other restrictions against Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The law grants the US President significantly broader powers to exert economic pressure on countries that continue to make large-scale purchases of Russian energy resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Reuters reports that the law provides for the introduction of tariffs within 30 days <strong>up to 100%<\/strong> for goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil or gas. The restrictions may also apply to countries that continue to knowingly make new purchases of Russian energy resources after the law comes into force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The law does not specify any particular countries. At the same time, India and China remain among the largest buyers of Russian oil.<\/p>\n<h2>India has warned the US of the consequences<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">New Delhi\u2019s reaction was strong. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that the country had already informed the US side of the possible consequences of such restrictions for bilateral relations and the international energy market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">India emphasised that it would remain committed to ensuring the energy security of its population and would purchase energy resources from various suppliers in line with market conditions. New Delhi also stated its readiness to defend its trade and economic interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The situation is particularly sensitive due to the scale of Russian supplies. Following the outbreak of Russia\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine, India sharply increased its purchases of cheaper Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to Reuters, Russian oil currently accounts for <strong>over 40% of India\u2019s total oil imports<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>India has already cut back on its purchases from Russia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In February 2026, Trump lifted the additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods after, according to the White House, India had committed to halting imports of Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">At that time, the US also reduced the reciprocal tariff for India from 25% to 18%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, the reduction in Russian supplies proved to be short-lived. Reuters reports that, following a decline in purchases in early 2026, India has once again increased its imports, particularly against the backdrop of disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East. Indian refineries have already contracted shipments of crude oil for September and October, including Russian crude.<\/p>\n<h2>Trade between the US and India is under threat<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Washington\u2019s new sanctions powers have come into effect at a time when the US and India are continuing negotiations on a broader trade agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The United States is India\u2019s largest export market. According to official figures cited by Reuters, Indian exports to the US between April and August totalled <strong>$42.79 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For New Delhi, the choice is becoming more difficult: a sharp reduction in supplies from Russia could drive up energy costs, whilst US tariffs could cause problems for Indian exporters.<\/p>\n<p>However, the mere fact that the law has been passed does not mean that the maximum 100 per cent tariff will automatically be imposed on India.
