On Monday, 21 September, Typhoon \u00abDujuan\u00bb approached the Pacific coast of eastern Japan and was expected to pass close to Tokyo. The authorities advised more than 1.6 million residents to evacuate, whilst Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways cancelled at least 275 flights. Meteorologists have issued warnings of flash floods, landslides and strong winds.<\/p>\n
Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this morning \u00abDuzhuan<\/strong>\u00bb was located approximately 130 kilometres south of Katsuura, near Tokyo. Wind speeds near the typhoon were around 144 km\/h.<\/p>\n In the afternoon, stronger winds and heavier rain were forecast for the Kanto region. Meteorologists warned that linear rain bands could bring extremely heavy rainfall in a short space of time, posing a risk of flash floods.<\/p>\n The most severe weather conditions were experienced on the Izu Islands and along part of the Pacific coast. In some areas, over 300 mm of rainfall has been recorded since Saturday.<\/p>\n The highest level of alert has been issued for the town of Osima, on the island of the same name, due to the risk of landslides. Similar alerts were also in place in Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka.<\/p>\n The JMA suggests that by Tuesday, total rainfall in some areas may exceed the average for September.<\/p>\n The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has reported that residents of Tokyo and surrounding areas have been urged to leave areas at risk. These are recommendations rather than a mandatory evacuation; people in areas at risk of flooding and landslides are advised to move to safer locations.<\/p>\n As of Monday, there were reports of at least one person suffering minor injuries and nine damaged houses. More than 9,000 households near Tokyo remained without electricity.<\/p>\n Japan Airlines has cancelled 135 flights, whilst All Nippon Airways has cancelled 140. Both airlines advise passengers to check the status of their specific flight before travelling to the airport: decisions may change depending on weather conditions. ANA has allowed passengers to change their bookings or obtain refunds for tickets on selected flights to and from Narita, Haneda and Hachijojima without incurring a penalty.<\/p>\n Services have been suspended on some railway lines in Tokyo and neighbouring regions. The organisers of the Tokyo Game Show have cancelled all exhibitions and broadcasts scheduled for 21 September. In Chiba, a major music festival and a baseball match have also been cancelled, whilst the equestrian events at the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture have been postponed until Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n
