Hungarian Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar reacted strongly to Budapest\u2019s inclusion in the Ukrainian \u00abCarpathian Eight\u00bb initiative. He stated that Hungary had not given its consent to participate in the initiative, and compared the situation to the formation of a football team in a neighbouring village, to which a person had been signed up without their knowledge.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1gy\u00e1r claimed that Hungary had been \u00abregistered\u00bb without its consent<\/h2>\n

Peter Magyar<\/strong> replied on the social media platform X to a post by the Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs Andrey Sibiga<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, it is unacceptable to include a sovereign state in an international initiative without prior consultation or its explicit consent.<\/p>\n

\u00abLet me give you an example: \u201cHello, we\u2019ve set up a football team in the neighbouring village. We don\u2019t know each other, but you\u2019re on the team, and you need to bring the ball\u201d,\u00bb wrote Madyar.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is how he commented on the Ukrainian initiative \u00abThe Carpathian Eight<\/a>\u00bb, which Kyiv presented as a new regional format for cooperation.<\/p>\n

On 21 September, M\u00e1d\u00e1r stated that Hungary is not a member of this forum and will not be joining it<\/strong>. According to him, Budapest received an invitation but decided not to accept it.<\/p>\n

Sibiga criticised Budapest\u2019s stance<\/h2>\n

Before M\u00e1dya responded, Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga stated that Kyiv was surprised by the Hungarian Prime Minister\u2019s recent \u00abunjustifiably confrontational\u00bb remarks.<\/p>\n

According to Sibiga, the \u00abCarpathian Integration Initiative\u00bb is aimed at regional development, interconnectivity and the implementation of joint projects. He also stated that he did not understand the reasons behind Hungary\u2019s categorical refusal to participate. The Ukrainian minister added that following the resignation Viktor Orban<\/strong>, in his view, some aspects of Budapest\u2019s previous policy towards Ukraine have remained in place.<\/p>\n

This was Sibiga\u2019s political assessment, with which the Hungarian side did not agree. In response, Hungary\u2019s Foreign Minister Anita Orb\u00e1n stated that the new government had already made a number of \u00abgestures of goodwill\u00bb towards Ukraine and rejected comparisons with the previous government\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n

What is the \u00abCarpathian Eight\u00bb?\u00bb<\/h2>\n

The initiative was presented by the president Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> 18 September, during the summit in western Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Reuters reported at the time that the new format was designed to deepen cooperation in the field of energy, logistics, cross-border trade and security<\/strong>. During the forum, more than 50 agreements were signed, with a total value of over \u20ac1 billion.<\/p>\n

In its initial description of the format, Reuters listed Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and the EU among the participants. However, following the summit, the Hungarian government publicly stated that Budapest did not consider itself a participant in this initiative.<\/p>\n

Consequently, Hungary\u2019s status within the format has become the subject of public debate between Kyiv and Budapest.<\/p>\n

The dispute concerns more than just the \u00abCarpathian Eight\u00bb<\/h2>\n

At the same time, another dispute arose between the parties \u2014 regarding the possible establishment of storage facilities for petroleum products in Hungary to meet Ukraine\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1gyar stated that there would be no such facility in Hungary whilst his government remained in power. Sibiga, for his part, emphasised that this is a matter of pragmatic cooperation between Ukrainian and Hungarian energy companies, agreed upon within the framework of a bilateral memorandum.<\/p>\n

Despite the mutual criticism, the Ukrainian minister stated that Kyiv remains open to \u00abmutually beneficial, pragmatic and mutually respectful\u00bb cooperation with Hungary.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
