Following the attack on 23 September, the data centres of the providers UTELS and \u00abPavutina\u00bb in Kyiv were damaged. Volunteer Serhiy Sternenko has urged residents of the capital to remain calm whilst preparing backup communication channels and basic supplies for the winter. Meanwhile, MP Oleksandr Fedienko emphasises that there is currently no question of the internet disappearing completely in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<p><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During the attack on 23 September in Kyiv, the data centres of two internet service providers were damaged.<\/li>\n<li>UTELS has warned of possible disruption to communications due to power cuts affecting its equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Serhiy Sternenko urged the people of Kyiv to make arrangements for alternative means of communication in advance.<\/li>\n<li>Oleksandr Fedienko stated that Russia is attempting to target major telecoms operators.<\/li>\n<li>The internet is not expected to disappear completely, but some services may become temporarily unavailable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"pmry03\" data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1133\">Data centres have been damaged following an attack in Kyiv<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1271\">As a result of the Russian attack on Kyiv on 23 September, data centres linked to the operations of internet service providers were affected <strong data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1270\">UTELS and \u00abPavutina\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1418\">UTELS has reported that the company\u2019s core equipment is housed in one of the capital\u2019s data centres. Following the attack, the equipment was left without power. As a result, the operator warned of possible disruptions to the network and access to services. Emergency teams have begun restoration work. \u00abPavutina\u00bb also reported communication problems following the attack.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1848\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/viyna\/ataka-azs-upg-ukrnafta-kyiv-23-veresnya\/\">Attack on the capital<\/a> It continued on the morning of 23 September. The Kyiv authorities reported strikes and fires in various parts of the city, including at infrastructure sites.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"50dxbt\" data-start=\"1850\" data-end=\"1903\">Sternenko urged Kyiv residents to set up backup communication channels<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"2041\">Following the latest attacks <strong>Serhiy Sternenko<\/strong> drew attention to the risks to the capital\u2019s telecommunications and other critical infrastructure. He urged the residents of Kyiv <strong data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2132\">Prepare for any potential difficulties this winter without panicking<\/strong> \u2014 ensure you have a basic supply of fuel and alternative means of communication.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2204\" data-end=\"2398\">Specifically, this refers to the possibility of using satellite internet or other backup channels in the event of prolonged disruptions to terrestrial infrastructure. This does not, however, mean that Kyiv is guaranteed to be left without internet access. The aim is to prepare for possible localised or temporary disruptions.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"172hecz\" data-start=\"2540\" data-end=\"2597\">Fedienko: Russia is trying to target telecoms operators<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2743\">People's Deputy <strong>Alexander Fedienko<\/strong> had previously stated that Russia has recently been carrying out targeted attacks <strong data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2742\">telecoms operators\u2019 digital infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2745\" data-end=\"2937\">On 18 September, he wrote that the enemy had \u00abbegun to destroy the digital infrastructure of telecoms operators\u00bb and called for consideration of possible asymmetric countermeasures. Fedyenko also noted that Russia\u2019s attacks pose additional risks to operators, whilst the large number of small and medium-sized providers makes the Ukrainian network more complex. According to him, damage to individual data centres could lead to <strong data-start=\"3237\" data-end=\"3292\">Some online services will be unavailable for a certain period of time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1yo5sr3\" data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3344\">Could Kyiv be left completely without internet access?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3346\" data-end=\"3428\">There is currently no confirmation of a complete internet outage in Kyiv or across Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3700\">According to Fedienko\u2019s assessment, the complex structure of Ukrainian networks, the existence of backup channels, cloud solutions and data backup make it considerably more difficult to completely disable the internet infrastructure through physical attacks alone.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3702\" data-end=\"3914\">However, localised problems may occur.
