According to the Centre for Public Health, such cases have already been identified in the Poltava, Kharkiv and Khmelnytskyi regions. This dangerous complication may be caused by counterfeit or substandard medication, incorrect storage, an error in dosage, or the procedure being carried out by someone without the appropriate medical qualifications.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<p><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cases of iatrogenic botulism have been reported in Ukraine.<\/li>\n<li>They were found in three regions.<\/li>\n<li>Complications may arise following botulinum toxin injections.<\/li>\n<li>If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, you should call 103 immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1hrgf9s\" data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"953\">Cases have already been recorded in three regions<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"1158\">Public Health Centre, 25 September <a href=\"https:\/\/phc.org.ua\/news\/nebezpechni-inekcii-krasi-smertelna-zagroza-yatrogennogo-botulizmu-yakoi-mozhna-uniknuti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, that in 2026, cases of iatrogenic botulism were recorded in <strong data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1119\">In the Poltava, Kharkiv and Khmelnytskyi regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1160\" data-end=\"1367\">Back at the end of August, the Centre for Public Health had reported only two cases \u2014 in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions. Consequently, over the course of the following month, the geographical spread of cases widened.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1510\"><strong>Iatrogenic botulism<\/strong> \u2014 is a serious complication not related to food, but to a medical procedure, specifically the administration of botulinum toxin preparations.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"q096ar\" data-start=\"1512\" data-end=\"1559\">Why \u00abbeauty injections\u00bb can be dangerous<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1800\">Botulinum toxin is a potent biologically active substance produced by a bacterium <em data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1662\">Clostridium botulinum<\/em>. In medicine and cosmetology, the purified toxin is used in very small and precisely calculated doses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"1887\">When a certified product is used correctly, the procedure is considered safe. The risk increases if a product of dubious origin is used, if the conditions for its transport or storage are not adhered to, if the dose is calculated or diluted incorrectly, or if the procedure itself is carried out by someone without the appropriate qualifications.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2344\">If a toxin enters the body in excessive quantities or spreads beyond the site of injection, it can block the transmission of nerve impulses and cause severe neurological disorders.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"s70n60\" data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2381\">Which symptoms should not be ignored?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2458\">The first signs of a complication may appear a few days after the injection.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2555\">The Public Health Centre advises seeking immediate medical attention if, following the administration of botulinum toxin, the following symptoms occur:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2754\">\n<li data-section-id=\"jwnyfh\" data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2574\">double vision;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vrt1ml\" data-start=\"2575\" data-end=\"2592\">drooping of the eyelids;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ofimjy\" data-start=\"2593\" data-end=\"2614\">difficulty swallowing;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1lcsn1u\" data-start=\"2615\" data-end=\"2636\">speech disorders;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1qzavoe\" data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2666\">severe muscle weakness;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ubo9a5\" data-start=\"2667\" data-end=\"2754\">a feeling of shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2756\" data-end=\"2953\">If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, you should <strong data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2828\">call 103 or 112<\/strong> and be sure to inform the medical staff that you have recently undergone a botulinum toxin treatment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3085\">In severe cases, botulism can progress rapidly and lead to respiratory failure.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"rr47yc\" data-start=\"3087\" data-end=\"3127\">Treatment may require resuscitation<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3129\" data-end=\"3239\">Patients with iatrogenic botulism may require hospitalisation, particularly in an intensive care unit.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3241\" data-end=\"3475\">The main specific treatment is the administration of botulinum antitoxin, which neutralises the toxin circulating in the blood. The sooner treatment begins, the greater the chances of avoiding serious consequences.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3477\" data-end=\"3769\">According to the Press Centre, <strong data-start=\"3492\" data-end=\"3566\">One dose of anti-botulism serum costs around 230,000 hryvnias<\/strong>. The department points out that the difference between having the procedure carried out by a licensed specialist and a dubious \u00abbargain\u00bb is often only around a thousand hryvnias.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"19ctvgc\" data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"3817\">What to check before a botulinum toxin injection<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"4021\">The Public Health Centre advises that such procedures should only be carried out by a doctor with the appropriate qualifications, working either in a healthcare facility or as a self-employed practitioner with a licence to practise medicine.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4023\" data-end=\"4216\">Before the procedure, it is worth checking whether you are registered <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/glp-1-preparaty-vplyvajut-na-rynok-kanabisu\/\">medication<\/a> in the State Register of Medicines of Ukraine, ask to see the packaging, and check the manufacturer, batch number and expiry date.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4218\" data-end=\"4448\">The Public Health Centre emphasises that a low price should not be the main criterion when choosing a treatment.
