The strike caused a fire, which was extinguished. The reactor itself and the safety-critical systems were not damaged, and no changes in the radiation background were recorded. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate reported on the consequences of the attack on 1 October.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ukrmedia-summary\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Russian UAV struck the grounds of the Institute of Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv.<\/li>\n<li>The VVR-M research nuclear reactor is located at the site.<\/li>\n<li>A fire broke out following the collision, but it was put out; there were no casualties.<\/li>\n<li>The reactor and the systems critical to safety were not damaged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A UAV struck the grounds of a nuclear facility<\/h2>\n<p>According to the State Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the strike took place <strong>30 September at approximately 18:18<\/strong> on the premises of the Institute of Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A fire broke out following the explosion, but it was successfully extinguished. No one was injured in the attack; experts are continuing to assess the damage and establish the full circumstances of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing is \u2014 directly <strong>the VVR-M research reactor<\/strong> and the systems critical to its safety were not damaged. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate reports that the radiation situation has not changed following the attack either: readings remain within <strong>0.16\u20130.20 \u00b5Sv\/h<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>The reactor has been shut down since the start of the full-scale war<\/h2>\n<p>An additional safety factor is that <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/mali-modulni-reaktory-ukrayina-minenergo-ssha\/\">reactor<\/a> VVR-M <strong>has not been operating normally since February 2022<\/strong>. To minimise radiation risks following the start of the full-scale invasion, operations were halted and the core was completely unloaded. At present, work at the plant is limited to routine maintenance of systems critical to safety.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, reports of a strike on the institute\u2019s premises do not mean that an operational power reactor was damaged or that a radiation accident has occurred in Kyiv. According to the regulator, there have been no such consequences following the attack.<\/p>\n<h2>What is known about the VVR-M reactor in Kyiv<\/h2>\n<p>VVR-M \u2014 <strong>a research reactor, not a power reactor<\/strong>. It was physically commissioned on 12 February 1960. The plant has a rated power of 10 MW, and the reactor itself was designed as a neutron source for fundamental and applied research in various fields of science and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have used it for research in nuclear and neutron physics, radiation physics, materials science and other fields. The Institute of Nuclear Research itself is an institution of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and has a number of specialised nuclear physics facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>The State Nuclear Regulatory Authority has responded to the attack<\/h2>\n<p>The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate described the strike on the institute\u2019s premises as an attack on a peaceful nuclear facility carrying out scientific and research activities. The agency also stated that such actions violate internationally recognised principles of nuclear and radiation safety, and described the attack as a war crime.<\/p>\n<p>Following the impact, the damage assessment is ongoing. At this stage, the key point remains that <strong>No damage to the reactor itself has been recorded; the safety systems remain intact; there are no casualties; and the background radiation levels have
