The court also partially upheld the civil claim brought by the victim\u2019s daughter, Sofiia Osiba, and ordered the payment of 5 million hryvnias in compensation for non-pecuniary damage in her favour. The judgment of the court of first instance may still be appealed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ukrmedia-summary\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vyacheslav Zinchenko has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Iryna Farion.<\/li>\n<li>The verdict was handed down on 1 October by the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Lviv.<\/li>\n<li>The court ordered the convicted man to pay 5 million hryvnias in compensation for non-pecuniary damage to Farion\u2019s daughter.<\/li>\n<li>Iryna Farion was fatally wounded by a gunshot in Lviv on 19 July 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Zinchenko was sentenced to life imprisonment<\/h2>\n<p>The verdict was handed down at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Lviv. The panel of judges found that <strong>Vyacheslav Zinchenko<\/strong> found him guilty and sentenced him to <strong>life imprisonment<\/strong>. He was 20 years old when the sentence was handed down.<\/p>\n<p>The court also partially upheld the civil claim brought by Iryna Farion\u2019s daughter<strong> Sofia Osoba<\/strong>. Zinchenko is to pay her <strong>5 million hryvnias in compensation for non-pecuniary damage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the verdict was announced, security measures were stepped up outside the courthouse and traffic on the street was restricted. A crowd had gathered there, comprising both supporters of Iryna Farion, who were calling for a life sentence, and people who supported Zinchenko.<\/p>\n<h2>What was Zinchenko accused of?<\/h2>\n<p>Zinchenko was charged with <strong>the murder of Iryna Farion<\/strong> and the unlawful handling of firearms. Following the reclassification of the case, the charges related to the intentional murder of a person in connection with the performance of their public duty, committed on grounds of national intolerance, as well as the unlawful handling of firearms.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment was submitted to the court at the end of December 2024. The trial on the merits of the case has been ongoing since 2025. According to the prosecution, during the pre-trial investigation, over 60 expert examinations were carried out, more than 1,500 people were questioned and a substantial volume of CCTV footage was analysed.<\/p>\n<p>Zinchenko himself denied any involvement in the murder after his arrest.<\/p>\n<h2>The murder of Iryna Farion<\/h2>\n<p>Iryna Farion was attacked <strong>On 19 July 2024, near her home on Masaryk Street in Lviv<\/strong>. She was shot in the head. The linguist was taken to hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery, but she died that same evening.<\/p>\n<p>Six days later, on 25 July, law enforcement officers arrested Vyacheslav Zinchenko, who was 18 at the time, in Dnipro. Following his arrest, the court ordered him to be remanded in custody without the possibility of bail. He has been in custody ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Iryna Farion was a linguist, professor, public figure and Member of the Ukrainian Parliament (VII convocation).<\/p>\n<h2>The verdict may still be appealed<\/h2>\n<p>The decision of the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv constitutes a judgement at first instance.
