In Marseille The headteacher of the lyceum was doused with petrol and injured, whilst near another educational establishment, protesters set fire to a fire engine. Fires were also reported at schools in Nantes and other cities. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has convened an inter-ministerial crisis meeting. Mass blockades of educational institutions have been ongoing for about a week, and the number of those detained is already in the hundreds.

Briefly about the main points

Protests by schoolchildren and students have spread across various regions of France.

In Marseille, the headteacher of the Victor Hugo secondary school was doused with petrol.

Near the Saint-Exupéry Lycée, a crowd forced the firefighters to abandon their vehicle, after which it was set alight.

A fire has damaged the Nelson Mandela Sixth Form College in Nantes; people have been evacuated.

Pupils are calling for more funding for education, replacements for absent teachers and school repairs.

A headteacher was attacked in Marseille

One of the most serious incidents took place at the Victor Hugo Lycée in Marseille. According to the public prosecutor’s office, The attackers doused the head of the educational institution with petrol. He sustained injuries, but the authorities did not initially release any further details about his condition.

Another outbreak of violence took place near the Saint-Exupéry secondary school. A fire engine arrived there in the morning to put out a fire. According to the police, hundreds of young people gathered around the vehicle. The firefighters were forced to abandon the vehicle, after which it was set alight.

The riots in Marseille were part of a much wider wave protests, which began about a week ago and has gradually spread to various regions of the country.

Fires broke out in educational establishments in Nantes

Things were also unsettled in Nantes. On the morning of 1 October, a fire broke out at the Nelson Mandela Lycée. According to local authorities, the fire damaged the hall and the façade of the building. People inside were evacuated, and pupils on their way to school were not allowed to enter the premises. No one was injured in the fire. Later, local authorities reported that fires had broken out at several other educational establishments in the city.

In Lille, the police used tear gas near the Faidherbe secondary school. There, the windows of bus stops were smashed and rubbish bins were set alight. Near Lyon, the protests and blockades affected around three dozen educational establishments.

Why did French schoolchildren take to the streets to protest?

The protest movement began due to problems within French schools themselves. Pupils are demanding that absent teachers be replaced, that funding for education be increased, that old buildings be renovated, and that acceptable learning conditions be ensured. Among the grievances is also criticism of the Parcoursup university admissions system, which some pupils regard as a source of additional psychological pressure. The protests have disrupted lessons in more than 330 schools across France.

According to the French Ministry of the Interior, by 30 September, at least some of them had been blocked 356 secondary schools. On 1 October, students also joined the protests: student organisations reported that around 30 university campuses had been blockaded.

Hundreds of people have been detained and dozens injured

As the protests spread, the number of clashes with the police is on the rise. According to the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nunes, on Wednesday alone the police detained 625 people, whilst 83 police officers and gendarmes were injured.

The Ministry of Education has reported that 119 people in the education sector have been injured since the protests began, including 34 staff members at educational institutions. The government condemns the violence, whilst acknowledging that there are problems in French schools. The Minister of Education Édouard Geoffroy suggested switching to remote learning in areas where protesters are blocking access to buildings.

Lecornu called an emergency meeting

Against the backdrop of the escalating situation, the Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an inter-ministerial crisis meeting on 1 October. The French government is attempting to reopen educational establishments whilst preventing the violence from spreading further.

The protests are taking place at a difficult time for the government. On the same day, France presented its draft budget for 2027, which provides for around €54 billion in savings. The planned measures include a pay freeze in the public sector and for most pensions, as well as cuts to some areas of public spending. The government explains these steps as necessary to reduce the budget deficit and stabilise public finances.

It was precisely the combination of long-standing problems in the education system, budgetary constraints and the increasingly fierce confrontation over school blockades that turned the student protests into one of France’s most acute domestic political crises this autumn.
