The bank attributed this to a need to increase liquidity, ensure the availability of assets in a crisis situation and diversify risks, without describing the operation as a preparation for war.

Briefly about the main points

DNB transferred around 86 tonnes of gold to London between March and August 2026.

The total volume of the Netherlands’ gold reserves remained unchanged following the transaction.

Some of the gold was sold in New York and purchased in London.

According to the NBP, Poland held 648 tonnes of gold at the end of August.

How the reserve was transferred

According to a DNB report dated 2 September, the operation involved around 86 tonnes out of approximately 313 tonnes of gold, which had previously been stored in the US and Canada. It is therefore incorrect to describe this as the export of the entire volume from the US alone.

DNB sold around 59 tonnes of gold in New York and bought the same amount in London. A further 27 tonnes were physically transported from the US and Canada to Zeist in the Netherlands, and from there a similar quantity was shipped to London.

DNB stated that a more balanced distribution of reserves between North America, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands should improve their availability in the event of a severe crisis. The total volume of the country’s gold reserves has remained unchanged.

Poland is building up its reserves, whilst France has replaced its bullion

Poland operates under a different mechanism: it is increasing its physical gold reserves. According to data from the NBP, as reported by the Polish specialist media, these reserves stood at 648 tonnes at the end of August 2026. This is more than the 506.5 tonnes of gold held by the ECB; the Governor of the NBP Adam Glapinski had stated a target of 700 tonnes.

The Banque de France reported that in 2025 it sold 129 tonnes of gold that had been held in New York and did not meet the LBMA standard, and purchased an equivalent amount of standard gold in Europe. The size of France’s reserves also remained unchanged.

Geopolitical risks may prompt central banks to strengthen the resilience of their balance sheets through gold holdings. At the same time, diversification and market dynamics are also among the factors at play. Official statements do not confirm the existence of a coordinated campaign by EU countries to prepare for war.

Between March and August 2026, DNB transferred around 86 tonnes of gold to London, citing reserve liquidity and risk diversification as the reasons.

DNB у березні—серпні 2026 року перемістив до Лондона близько 86 тонн золота, пояснивши це ліквідністю резервів і розподілом ризиків.
[805618
805624
post-31682","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economics","tag-805624
["GET
