The Security Service of Ukraine has reported that two Russian fighter jets have been shot down \u2014 Su-35 and Su-34<\/strong> \u2014 at the \u00abKhanska\u00bb military airfield in Adygea. An ammunition depot on the airfield\u2019s premises was also hit. Russia is using both types of aircraft in the war against Ukraine, in particular to deliver guided aerial bombs.<\/p>\n

What is known about the attack on the \u00abKhanska\u00bb airfield?\u00bb<\/h2>\n

The attack took place on the night of 4 October. According to the SBU, drones from the \u00abAlpha\u00bb Special Operations Centre carried out a strike on the \u00abKhanska\u00bb military airfield in the Republic of Adygea. As a result of the strike, the following were hit: Su-35 multi-role fighter<\/strong> and Su-34 fighter-bomber<\/strong>. An ammunition depot located on the grounds of a military facility was also hit.<\/p>\n

The airfield is situated near Maykop, approximately 500 km from the territory controlled by Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Even before the SBU\u2019s official statement, monitoring services had reported explosions and a major fire in the vicinity of the airfield. Thermal anomalies near the site were also detected by NASA\u2019s FIRMS system.<\/p>\n

Why the Su-34 and Su-35 are important to the Russian Air Force<\/h2>\n

Su-34<\/a> It is one of the key strike aircraft in the Russian tactical air force. It is actively used for strikes against ground targets and for delivering guided aerial bombs.<\/p>\n

The Su-35 is a multi-role fighter aircraft that Russia uses to provide cover for strike aircraft, conduct air patrols and carry out other combat missions.<\/p>\n

The SBU emphasised that Both types of aircraft are capable of carrying guided aerial bombs<\/strong>, which Russian troops are using against Ukrainian positions and settlements. According to the SBU\u2019s estimates, the export value of the Su-35 is approximately $100 million<\/strong>, whilst the Su-34 \u2014 approximately $50 million<\/strong>. These are indicative export prices, not the actual value of specific damaged aircraft.<\/p>\n

\u00abKhanska\u00bb was already under attack<\/h2>\n

The \u00abKhanska\u00bb airfield is used by the Russian military air force. According to publicly available information, Su-34s, Su-35s and other aircraft have previously been spotted there.<\/p>\n

This is not the first attack on the facility. In October 2024, Ukrainian forces had already carried out a strike on this airfield. At the time, it was reported that infrastructure and fuel and lubricants had been damaged.<\/p>\n

The latest strike forms part of a series of Ukrainian attacks on Russia\u2019s military aviation infrastructure. In addition to the aircraft themselves, ammunition depots, fuel tanks and aviation support facilities remain key targets.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
