The One Ring forms the central motif, whilst the gold and silver versions feature a special finish that creates a reflection of the Eye of Sauron.

Briefly about the main points

The Royal Mint unveiled the commemorative 50-pence coin on 20 May 2026.

This issue marks the start of a planned series of seven coins based on *The Lord of the Rings*.

The Eye of Sauron is backlit only in the gold and silver versions.

A standard copper-nickel coin cost £15, whilst a gold Proof coin cost £2,420.

The first coin in the planned series

The issue was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of *The Fellowship of the Ring* — the first film in the trilogy Peter Jackson, which was issued in 2001. According to the Royal Mint, this is the first of seven planned commemorative 50-pence coins based on *The Lord of the Rings*.

The forthcoming issues are to mark the 25th anniversaries of all three films in the trilogy. Each coin has a face value of 50 pence.

The One Ring and the light projection

The reverse of the coin is centred on the One Ring. The Royal Mint states that the design features Elvish script and an inscription in the Black Speech, relating to the artefact from the works J. R. R. Tolkien.

This unusual effect is not present in all versions. In the gold and silver versions, the caustic surface focuses the light in such a way that on the surface beneath the coin a reflection of the Eye of Sauron appears. The Royal Mint describes this as the first use of such technology on a British coin available to the public.

From £15 to £2,420, depending on the model

At the time of the review, the standard copper-nickel version cost £15. The coloured copper-nickel Brilliant Uncirculated coin was priced at £27.50 and had a limited mintage of 20,000.

The price of the gold Proof version was £2,420. It was struck from 916.67 fine gold in a mintage of 100 pieces; at the time of checking, it was listed as unavailable. The retail price of collector’s editions depends on the metal, the quality of the strike and the mintage, so the Royal Mint’s prices are subject to change.

The Royal Mint has unveiled a 50p coin to mark the 25th anniversary of *The Fellowship of the Ring*.
