The analysis covered registry data from 2000 to 2023, and for England, from 2001 to 2023.

Briefly about the main points

The WCRF has recorded an increase in early-onset cancer cases in England, the US and the Netherlands.

In England, the incidence of early-stage prostate cancer has almost quadrupled.

The reasons behind this trend are still being investigated: the analysis does not identify a single factor.

King’s College London is recruiting 250,000 adults to take part in a study into early-stage bowel cancer.

What are the limitations of the WCRF analysis?

The Foundation compared incidence rates amongst people aged up to 50 in the USA and the Netherlands for the period 2000–2023, and in England for the period 2001–2023. In England, significant increases were recorded for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and uterine cancer.

In the US, the increase was seen in breast cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and uterine cancer. In the Netherlands, it affected cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney cancer and liver cancer.

Cancer in people under the age of 50 is still relatively rare: the WCRF notes that the typical age at which a cancer diagnosis is made in developed countries is over 60. At the same time, the foundation has identified the changing trends among younger generations as an important area for research and prevention.

How have the figures changed in England?

The WCRF recorded the most significant increase among men under 50 in England for prostate cancer: the rate rose from 1.0 cases per 100,000 population in 2001 to 3.6 in 2023 — almost fourfold.

The incidence rate of colorectal cancer among people under 50 has risen from 3.9 to 8.4 per 100,000. For uterine cancer, it rose from 1.8 to 3.9, and for kidney cancer — from 1.5 to 3.0 per 100,000, i.e. it has doubled.

Among women under 50, the breast cancer rate rose from 42.0 to 47.5 per 100,000. A statistically significant increase was also observed in England for early-stage liver and pancreatic cancer.

Trends in the US and the Netherlands

In the US, the incidence of kidney cancer among people under 50 has risen from 2.5 cases per 100,000 in 2000 to 5.3 in 2023. The WCRF has also recorded an increase in early-onset cases of colorectal cancer, uterine cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer.

In the Netherlands, the incidence of early-stage cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney cancer and liver cancer was on the rise. At the same time, in all three countries, the incidence of lung cancer among people under the age of 50 was falling.

Media reports attribute this trend to a decline in smoking prevalence; however, the WCRF’s descriptive analysis itself does not identify the reasons for this decline.

What is known about the possible causes

The WCRF identifies possible contributing factors to this trend as excess weight, dietary habits, insufficient physical activity, alcohol, smoking and environmental factors. At the same time, the number of cases detected may be influenced by greater awareness of symptoms, seeking medical help, testing and diagnosis.

According to the fund’s assessment, Around 40% of all cancer cases are linked to modifiable risk factors. This overall estimate does not specify what proportion of early-onset cases or specific types of cancer is attributable to each of the factors.

Mark Lawler, Professor of Digital Health and Translational Cancer Genomics, described the trend as a «time bomb». Executive Director of Research and Policy at the WCRF Jota Mitru, for her part, emphasised the need to prioritise early-stage cancer in research and prevention.

A major study into early-stage bowel cancer

King’s College London has announced the recruitment of 250,000 adults for the PROSPECT-UK study. The study aims to investigate the links between diet, lifestyle, gut health and environmental factors and the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer.

The study should help to determine the extent to which changes in risk factors and improvements in the detection of the disease have contributed to the rise in diagnoses. At present, the WCRF’s descriptive analysis shows trends in incidence, but does not identify a single cause for the rise in early-onset cancer cases.

According to the WCRF, the incidence of seven types of cancer has risen in England amongst people under the age of 50; a similar trend has been observed in the US and the Netherlands.

За даними WCRF, в Англії зросла захворюваність на сім видів раку серед людей до 50 років; подібну динаміку виявили у США й Нідерландах.
[806778
806790
post-32207","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-suspilstvo","tag-806790
["GET
