A group of armed, masked men attempted to force at least 20 illegal migrants into Latvian territory and threatened Latvian military personnel. After the first attempt was thwarted, a few hours later the masked men entered Latvian territory, damaged an electrical switchboard and stole CCTV equipment. The incident was reported by the Latvian National Armed Forces and the country\u2019s Minister of the Interior.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 20 migrants were attempting to cross from Belarus into Latvia.<\/li>\n<li>They were accompanied by armed, masked men who threatened the Latvian soldiers.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequently, masked men broke into the Latvian premises, damaged an electrical switchboard and stole the cameras.<\/li>\n<li>Before the border guards arrived, they had managed to return to Belarus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Armed men threatened Latvian soldiers<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Latvian National Armed Forces, a group of at least 20 migrants attempted to cross the border illegally from Belarus this week.<\/p>\n<p>There were people wearing masks with them. The Latvian military stated that the escorts were <strong>They were armed, behaved aggressively, threatened military personnel and literally pushed the migrants towards Latvian territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The attempted border crossing was successfully halted. The Latvian Armed Forces described the situation as far more provocative and aggressive than most previous incidents in this area.<\/p>\n<h2>A few hours later, the group did eventually make their way into Latvia<\/h2>\n<p>Latvian Minister of the Interior <strong>J\u0101nis Dombravs<\/strong> reported that a few hours after the first clash <strong>people wearing masks crossed the national border<\/strong>, damaged the electrical distribution board and stole the CCTV cameras.<\/p>\n<p>By the time the border guard unit arrived at the scene, the intruders had already returned to Belarus.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the Latvian side has not reported that these individuals were official Belarusian military personnel or border guards. It is therefore more accurate to speak of <strong>an armed group operating from the Belarusian side of the border<\/strong>, rather than a confirmed attack by Belarusian forces.<\/p>\n<h2>Latvia had previously stated that Belarusian organisations were involved<\/h2>\n<p>The incident is taking place against the backdrop of a much wider crisis on Latvia\u2019s eastern border. Back in January, the Latvian military released documents which, in their assessment, indicate the involvement of Belarusian security and military forces in organising illegal migration.<\/p>\n<p>Among the incidents recorded, the Latvian side cited the transport of migrants in Belarusian military vehicles and the escorting of people to the border by representatives of the security forces.<\/p>\n<p>In August <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/latviia-liniia-oborony-proty-rf\/\">Latvia<\/a> Due to the deteriorating situation, it launched a special operation on the eastern border <strong>VILKATIS<\/strong>. It involves border guards, the police, the military and the security services, and drones, aircraft and other technical equipment are used for surveillance.<\/p>\n<h2>There are still thousands of attempts to cross the border illegally<\/h2>\n<p>The pressure on the border continues. On 3 October, Latvian border guards stopped <strong>20 people<\/strong>, who were attempting to enter the country illegally from Belarus. Since the start of 2026, the number of people stopped on this route has exceeded <strong>11,700 people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Latvian government explicitly refers to the use of illegal migration from
