Temporary residence permits issued on this basis will be issued or renewed until that date, the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior has announced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\">\n<p><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Temporary protection in Lithuania has been extended until 4 March 2028.<\/li>\n<li>Existing permits for Ukrainians will be replaced without any additional requirements and free of charge.<\/li>\n<li>Some new applicants are required to provide proof that they have fulfilled their military service obligations.<\/li>\n<li>In Lithuania, more than 52,000 Ukrainians hold valid permits granted on the grounds of protection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What are the rules for new applicants?<\/h2>\n<p>The requirement to provide proof of having fulfilled military service applies to persons subject to such service in Ukraine who are applying for temporary protection. It has been in force at EU level since 31 July 2026, in accordance with Council Decision 2026\/1912, and was not first introduced by a decision of the Lithuanian Government on 7 October.<\/p>\n<p>Possible forms of proof include a document confirming legal <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/etias-2026-platnyi-vizd-do-yes\/\">crossing the Ukrainian border<\/a> upon departure, an exit stamp in the passport or an official document confirming exemption from military service or the fulfilment of military service. Under the decision of the Council of the EU, an exception is provided for persons who were granted protection in the relevant Member State no later than 30 July 2026 and who have maintained that status continuously.<\/p>\n<h2>What will change for those who already have a permit?<\/h2>\n<p>The Ministry of the Interior and the Lithuanian Migration Department have announced that the procedure for replacing existing permits remains unchanged: there are no additional requirements, and the service is free of charge. The issuance and replacement of documents valid until 4 March 2028 began on 5 October.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior, more than 52,000 Ukrainians hold valid residence permits granted on the basis of temporary protection. LRT cited a more precise figure \u2014 52,052 valid permits as at 6 September 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>Why were the documents\u2019 validity periods extended?<\/h2>\n<p>Previously, residence permits issued on the basis of temporary protection in Lithuania were valid until 4 March 2027. The extension is in line with the EU Council decision of 30 July 2026, which extended the temporary protection mechanism for displaced persons from Ukraine until 4 March 2028.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior, extending the validity period of these documents should reduce the administrative burden for both beneficiaries of protection and the Migration Department.
